Hopefully there are still a few knowledgeable people dropping in from time to time who may have some ideas for me........ 2005 AXB, 1.9 with 5 speed box
When I accelerate hard, up a hill, towing etc I get a high pitched squeal. If quickly press clutch and release it straight away again then the noise goes even when returning straight to same revs and speed. I've changed belts and idler, spent ages looking at hoses for an air leak, slip hose or dodgy one of those nasty clips but all have turned up nothing I can see. Happens in all gears in all rev ranges which makes me think it's probably not turbo. No judder when reversing uphill but could it be clutch / thrust bearing or similar or maybe something else completely. Sometimes also have to give the gear leaver a bit of a thump so my gut says clutch but any other cheaper checks to try 1st ?? |

It's always hard to describe a noise to someone else! I would say not the clutch unless it is slipping. Even then, if a clutch is slipping it's rare for it to make any noise apart from an increase in the engine revs. It won't be the release bearing part of the clutch because there is no pressure on that if your foot isn't on the pedal at the time of the noise.
Exhaust leaks close to the engine (like manifold or turbo connections) can cause a squeal. You should see telltale soot marks. It's also worth a good look at the intercooler. They can split a whistle or squeal. Look out for broken binding straps or bulging or oil stains like mine here! ![]() The alternator freewheel would be another possibility. They normally seize internally (soundlessly) and cause the belt to bounce around and they will wreck an alternator over time by increased vibration. It is less common for them to slip and squeal but possible. |

Thanks - I'll take another good look around those hoses......
Put a new alternator on not that long ago with the right freewheeling pulley as the previous one was wrong I believe, hadn't considered the intercooler, I'll take a rummage around that while going over pipes again. Failing that I'll have to put up with it till something becomes more obvious !
