A friend is interested in an 81 LT 28 with the 2.0L inline-4 motor.

Does that engine share the bell housing bolt pattern and engine mount patterns with any other more modern turbo-diesel engines?

Don't know the answer to that, and I know petrol is cheaper over there but in the UK you can get 30+mpg if you convert to lpg. Its about the same economy as a diesel but without the conversion difficulties.

if you are dead set on a diesel conversion then go for an engine and gearbox out of a later vehicle because they will be 5 speed not 4.

My own preference is a small bolck V8 running on lpg with an auto box.

Actually diesel is currently LESS expensive than Regular Unleaded Gasoline.

The vehicle already has a 5-speed manual.

What diesel engines were fitted and do they share the common inline-4 or inline-5 bell housing bolt pattern?

You could be right, but I don't know of a volvo car with a straight 6 2.4L.
The 6cyl volvo's I know used a french filth V6.

A suitable petrol engine, at that time still the standard engine even for transporters, was identified at Audi, a sister company within the Volkswagen Group in 1976. The biggest engine from the Audi 100, a four-cylinder engine with a cubic capacity of two litres (also used by the Porsche 924), proved suitable and was adapted to the specific requirements of a utility vehicle. Accordingly, the developers cut back on performance, to 55 kW (75hp) in favour of achieving high torque at low speed.

At the same time a diesel engine was developed at Perkins, a British manufacturer. The four-cylinder 2.7l engine, included in the LT range from 1976 onwards, developed just 48 kW (65hp), did not run particularly smoothly, and had an unpleasant sound to it. LTs equipped with this engine are typically not favoured by LT enthusiasts, due to their infamous characteristics.

Volkswagen reacted quickly; in 1979, the Perkins engine was replaced with a diesel engine that had proved successful on the Volkswagen Golf - while adding two more cylinders. The 1.6l four-cylinder engine became a 2.4l six-cylinder delivering 55 kW (75hp). Unlike other diesel engines in this performance class, the assembly stood out for its balanced vibration behaviour and pleasing acoustics. The engine worked so convincingly that Volvo adopted it for the Volvo 200 series, and were therefore able to offer the first passenger car with a six-cylinder diesel engine.

Dissagree with the developers on the 2.0 engine, the only way to get up hills in mine is to thrash it.
25mph in 2nd gear and it will go up pretty much anything, but less than that you end up in first.

Interesting that they added 2 extra cylinders to a golf engine, who ever came up with that idea definitely thought out of the box.

Ta for the info Mike.

I would think different mounts and I would imagine that the gearbox, prop shaft and possibly rear diff will all need to come off with the engine.

This is just based on removing a diesel engine and replacing a petrol engine which I nearly had to do the other week. For this the above had to come out as well as a change of electrics. (I was lucky enough to rescue the petrol motor)

Have you looked at: www.vagcat.com (you just have to register to view)

You can check the years and compare engine numbers / part numbers to get the VW codes of each. You will see if the mounts, gearing etc have the same codes.
