Topic: Window Seals (Again!) Posted: 19 Apr 07 at 02:14 |
Sorry to bring this one up again. My sliding side windows leak in heavy rain. I have read the previous posts on this issue and the leaks seem to be from the bottom of the window and the VW solution involves a re-design of the window incorporating a drain at the bottom of the window. My window leaks at the top at the join between two seals and the water falls straight to the floor due to the curve of the van side. Therefore a drain at the base of the window won't help. I will post a picture later but has anyone else had this leak and if so is there a fix? I reckon I could do a temporary fix by cleaning and spraying with water repellent spray but it is not what you expect on a $50000 van. |

If its in warranty, get the new windows fitted - you get a complete unit with new seals, which sound like either they are missing or have perished Edited by Mutley |

I'm new to the forum and spent the last hour or so reading previous items, since I bought my van 2 years ago the windows have leaked whenever it rains.I was today and was speaking to an ex T5 owner who told me about the forum. I have lost track of how many times my van has been back to the dealers to get it sorted with no success. It is booked in to have the latest windows fitted, they have got my van for 4 days next week, so watch this space................... |

I've just had the latest side window fitted, by Murrays in Plymouth. I've had a pretty good look at them and to be honest I can't see any difference from the last ones i had. I can't see any tray or drainage exit. The windows are labelled with a 6 with a dot to the right. Hasn't rained yet, so don't know if they've worked. Has anyone else had the 'latest' drain version fitted and if so can you see a difference? Thanks. |

Hi ronin, I had the latest windows fitted a few weeks ago & the modification includes a drain channel on the bottom guide rail to channel any water back to the outside. The whole bonded window will have been replaced, not just the sliding section, and it will have a 7 with dots (can't remember how many!). Mine already leaks again but at least the water finds its way outside (except when the sliding door is slamed closed and any water in the channel flies everywhere! so not a hugely successful redesign! ) |

Thanks Silver, I did have the entire unit changed both sides. I phoned Murrays but they insist the version they fitted yesterday ( with 6 on it ) is the latest version. They mentioned it being a 30fs or something. They didn't understand what version 7 meant! Anyway, I'll wait and see if they still leak. Thanks for your info. |

Took a couple of shots that might help you, one of the window code &
one of the drainage channel (complete with leaked water ) The channel drains into the hole at the end of the guide rail. Hope this helps & confirms whether you' have indeed had the latest fix or not! I can't imagine they've fitted the earlier design by mistake, but who knows with VW! The numbers relate to year of manufacture (6= 2006, 7= 2007 etc. I dunno what the dots mean though!) so for them to say that they didn't know what the 7 meant is a bit of a worry in itself! Bugger!! Cant get the photos to show at the moment so I've linked them: Photo 1 Photo 2 Edited by SilverT5TDI130 |

We had them fixed. The offside is the latest type, but when SMG opened the box for the near side window, it contained the wrong one. It happens.... However, they put a new one mk6 in, and no leaks either side in the last month. I'm pleased that they did use their initative and do this rather than leave the old one in. From what Silver says earlier, if you slam the door with the latest type when its wet, water sprays every where... |

Many thanks for the pictures Silver. It appears I do have the drain hole with the channel, as in your photo. Obviously they started fitting this on some of the '6' versions. I'm going to apply silicone grease to the seals every now and then as this also really helps. I've some in a spray form which is easily applied using a cotton bud. |

If they build them with a drain channel they can't have much confidence in them can they? Or am i missing something?
