I have just spent a cold sunday afternoon working on my cousins 130 T5 window regulator, it had broken ages ago and I stripped it a couple of weeks ago to find some munched up cables and broken plastic guides
A repair kit like this was purchased and I attempted to install today. It all went very badly and the air was often blue, no matter how I fitted the new parts and how free the mechanism and window seemed whilst manually working it I would build it up and refit the window only to find that a cable had came off/a guide/clamp had moved or got caught etc etc etc
Has anyone got detailed pictures of the window rail mechanisms or even a decent exploded diagram before I freeze to death/go nuts?
Any help very much appreciated

An arsehole of a job indeed. Save yourself the time and effort and get your cousin to invest in a complete new regulator (about £100).

this was also a major problem on new beetle when it was launched, it lunched its cables and just tore up the capstans, in the end i gave up and bought a new complete door insert card with new cable mech on for each side and eventually VW did a recall on them...too late for me.
The problem was getting the wire wrapped enough times on the winding capstan to grip but so it didn't snag on itself (mega lube) as it winds the glass.bitch of a job. saw a great post...I'll never have any money ever again now I have a T5! Sorry, I Can't find a procedure for it anywhere!!??? Edited by dvdfrost - 31 Jan 11 at 10:26 |

Yep, everthing you say about the Beetle problems sounds similar to the issues I`m experiencing with this window
I`ve managed to get the reel in place with the cables connected and the correct lenght (trial and error), I`ve also got the entire mechanism built up and manully moved the window clamps up and down (found it smooth and free) as well as checking the windows movement through the rubbers (again smooth and free) but when I build it all up it just falls apart like a cheap watch
I found this link very helpful even though it is for a Golf

You can buy the complete thing cheaper from aftermarket suppliers now. I'd always rather use a genuine part but if the original failed so early how can you tell that the new genuine one will be any better?

Yep, true, if the original was crap why buy another (this logic applies to AXE manifolds too)?
Where should I look for an aftermarket regulator T5 TDI?

Check out ebay maybe but I bought one for a Golf about six months ago from Volkspares in SE London. I think it cost around £70 at the time but I could be wrong. There are quite a few VW specialists on the web.

Crikey, if the T5 job is as complicated as that then I'm not surprised the air was blue when it didn't work!

Searched and found this topic.
Today my NS Electric window went nearly to the top then stopped
Guessing it is the regulator and reading the posts here these window regulator repair kits aren't worth bothering with ?
2004 - T5 Kombi
Where's the best (and most competative price) place to get the unit from and is it a s*d to fit?
Thanks

I bought this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-T5-WINDOW-REGULATOR-REPAIR-KIT-FRONT-RIGHT-/180497715617?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2a068091a1 It was really hard to install and needed some modification, but when it was done I saved few hundred euros... to spend on something else. If you dont have patience or dont want to lose your temper, just buy original regulator kit... ;) |

Hi - I just did this job with the Ebay repair kit and it appears to be working. After reading previous I did warn the neighbours to stay indoors and avoid flying tools but actually, with a bit of prep it went OK. The best tip I can give is to have a number of torn off strips of gaffer-tape ready and waiting as the main issue is keeping everything in one place at one time. With the use of gaffer holding cables in holders and holders to the door frame I was able to complete this task in 20-mins or so. The other thing to concentrate on is the amount of cable to wrap around the drum. Best to set the position of the window clamps at one extreme (I used both up) then you know you have one very long cable on the drum and one very short. I also found it easier to drop the drum into it's housing when I got the cable-wrapping about right, complete the cable path through the slots on the drum and then drop off the other end of each cable housing so you can manipulate the sockets and springs in the house correctly. Then loosely fix the drum to the door frame and re-insert the non-drum end of the cables back in their pulleys/slots tensioning against the springs at the drum end. This will make sense when you look at it in situ.
Remember to remove the gaffer afterwards! I also gave the entire set-up a good spray with lithium grease afterwards just to keep it running smoothly

So I'm half considering having a go with one of the window kits from eBay as my window mechanism is currently in pieces (clips broken and cables are jammed in the drum). Do the kits come with reasonable instructions?
With the window am I right that my only other option is to spend a bit more and get a completely new door card with the window mechanism all attached? I'm concerned though that getting a second hand one runs the risk of the clips being worn already? or am I just being paranoid? Another concern is reattaching parts that are riveted on (it looks like I need to remove at least one rivet to get into the drum where the cables are wound) and if I get a new door card I'll need to remove rivets holing the door lock on. Do you all have riveters to refit parts? Any help . suggestions / warnings much appreciated. Thanks |

If it's only the plastic retaining clips are broken and everything else looks good, you can buy the clips separately, if you have lost the sequence of how the cable is wound on let us know and I'll look for a picture of it to show.
Those rivets don't really have to go back, the lock is secured by it's mounting bolts on the door jamb, the lock is fixed on the metal carrier plate at the factory for assembly purpose. To assemble the cable back on there is a tab over one (or all I cant remember) of the cable wheels, you carefully bend that up and slip the cable on the wheel then bend tab back, that will overcome the tight cable. let us know how you go. |

Thanks, wasn't really wanting to buy a riveter so that's reassuring. Have actually ordered a whole window kit as I'm not convinced the cable isn't damaged inside the drum and figured it wasn't too expensive just incase - especially with the postage likely to take longer than usual.
Once that's arrived I just need a dry day when no-one needs to go anywhere (it's our only vehicle and so the panel needs to be in place before heading out anywhere). Will let you know how I get on & how much swearing is involved

So I managed to get the kit installed (the cables were mashed up so I did need the full kit). Was a bit of a pain to do but the eBay seller send me a fairly helpful video.
The problem I have now is that the window seems to go too far down inside the door and clunks at the bottom. I'm thinking there must be some kind of stopper or limiter that has got damaged when the window fell into the door and so now the window doesn't know where the bottom should be! I can't seem to find any pictures showing this so if anyone has any ideas what it might be or where it should be I'd be very grateful. Cheers
