Hi all, I have recently entered the world of VW campers and brought a T3, and need some advice.

Not long after I brought it the oil pressure switch went, before taking to the garage I put quite a bit of oil in it as it was pi**ing out so wanted to make sure I had enough to get me to the garage, anyway when I then started it, it blew out loads of smoke, which I am hoping is just overfill with oil, but maybe a sign of engine on way out \ gasket gone ? It is still at the garage and I am awaiting verdict!

If engine has gone, and I need to replace engine, is there much difference in cost, of dropping the same recon\new engine back in, or should I get something with a bit more power - it currently has a 1.9 petrol in it, and didnt like going much over 55 - what do you reckon ?

Cheers,

Cloughie

Depends whether you are wanting to keep the van original.  When my 1.9dg failed the only recon engine with more power i could find was nearly £2k (1.9 bored to 2.0).  The actual increase in power was very little.  You could fit a 2.1 injection but again you are going to need deep pockets.  Plus from my own personal experience recon engines often come with their own problems and rarely last much longer than the 12mth warranty period.  Folks have increased the power on the above engines but expect to pay a hefty price.

If it is an increase in power and you are not fussed about sticking with the stock motor there are plenty of alternate engine conversions which can be done for a lot less than the the price of a stock replacement.  I have a Subaru 2.5 fitted in mine and this actually cost next to nothing as i broke the Subaru for parts and made enough to cover the costs of the conversion parts.  Loads of power and better mpg.

Another option is an engine from the VAG range.  A mate of mine is currently fitting a 1.9tdi into his van and Hutch and a few others on here have fitted GTi engines.

If you need anymore info or alternatives have a look at vwkd.com as there are loads of conversions possible.

Bush bash bosh?  Bit of wiring bit of pipe work.

Expand on how much work is to be done.

Not taking the piss.  But I know someone who just read this and rang me.  I said I have no clue.

Are you registered on 80-90 Caron?

If so there's this thread for a Cossy V6 into  a Crewcab....there's 18 pages so get comfy!

Neil who comments on the 1st page built the V6 Cossy Panel Van I used to own.....rapid doesn't get anywhere near describing how well it went!

The problem with a lot of wbx so-called "rebuilds" is that people don't want to pay proper money for a proper job, then this gets compounded by sketchy "rebuilders" who bank on these two facts:

1. That you can't open up a boxer to see what has or hasn't been done without invalidating the warranty
2. Most get fitted into marginally reliable, infrequently used campers which cover small annual milages, so the warranty expires before the engine does any appreciable amount of work.

I gave my syncro caravelle's DG a hasty repair and freshen up after one of the exhaust stud bosses rotted off, it was the first one I had done but I did do these jobs:

Glaze-bust the bores and re-ring the pistons, put in a new genuine VW camshaft (worn out), re-faced the lifters, replaced one snapped head stud and fixed the stripped sump plug.
One Febi gasket kit from Baxter's and a few tiny details, ran it every day all summer and autumn, 300+ miles a week, utterly reliable and no pissing leaks.

Now it returns 27 mpg on a run, keeping it to 60. That's what a proper wbx rebuild is worth.

Thanks all for the quick responses, got a few options here, I dont mind paying out but dont have loads to spare (also still convincing misses what a great purchase the van was).

The subaru option seems popular on other sites and reasonably straight forward for a newbie like me, I'll start to get some prices.

Thanks again,

My 2p.... if you want to stick with petrol go for a 2.0 GTI. If you want diesel, go for a 1.9TD/TDI.

Rebuilding a waterboxer is a waste of time and money when there are better engines out there that are so easily fitted.

Plenty of people love the subarus, but unless youre going to go for a big power option the benefits and cost of doing it doesnt make sense against something like a GTI.
And of course, the more power you have the sooner the rest of the drivetrain will show its weaknesses.

55 from a 1.9 is definately wrong.

You know what I meant though...don't know why I wrote Febi Confused

My wbx rebuild was a case of "oh crap 3 buses all broken, for f###s sake fix one or you're not going to VF this year" and I reckon it cost me less than £500 including a donor engine.

I'd like to stick an ADY in the syncro if it hangs around long enough, but those diesel parts are getting scarce and expensive. I'd go for a home-brewed semi-upright a d a p t o r plate onto the wbx bell if it was me, but I can make all that stuff Wink

Thanks for the information so far, Ive looked at loads of Gti engines and the seem pretty \ very reasonable.

So next step is to source an adapter plate, can anyone point me in the right direction, Ive spent a couple of hours looking and not come up with much.

On top of an adapter plate, an ELRING gasket kit is mentioned above - can anyone tell me what else I need to source before I start ?

Thanks,
Cloughie

You obviously haven't looked on this very forum and in this very section! Confused

A GTi engine fits upto a Diesel bellhousing...no adaptor required.

yeah this is the conversion i am doing AGG currently in the process of finding all the diesel bits i need. i think it is better to run it as per the diesel set up other wise you have to mess around with adapters ect and if it is done that way it sits above the deck level dont it ?. diesel set up seems the best way just a bugger some times to find the bits :)
