We tend to holiday in France and always have, and basically you pay for a pitch and people, so not had any issue with what goes on it before.  I have never warmed to the drive away awning idea for the reasons you give; I like to have an open view both of the van and from within so always opted for a separate cooking tent. A wind out awning keeps the heat of the sun or rain and mud from the entrance and is useful for cooking and eating on one night stopovers and touring. We went from Atlantic to Caravelle and tent, brief encounter with an Autohomes Bedouin, back to Caravelle and tent, then caravan, Multivan and caravan and tent and cooking tent!  It`s a bloody mess! Smile

Kind of agree on the awning front, that's what started us thinking in the first place.
This year We have been using a Outwell bearlake 6 canvas tent and the caddy to cart it all round. Means we don't have the problems of the drive away awning etc. The only real issue of not using a camper is we are limited to what time of year we can go away.

I started with a T3 tin top camper and drive away awning, found it a pain when moving the van and not much space, then went T4 coachbuilt and didn't like it, too big and didn't get used other than weekends away.
Now got a T3 Doka with a Canvas bell tent, love the set up, quick and easy to put up, loads of space in Doka and tent, Doka gets used loads and very versatile.
Each to their own as they say Smile

I agree the awning is a bit of a faff, even though ours goes up quick. As some of you know, we have a high top Westy T3, and if there is just the two of us, we can stop overnight without the awning. I do like the idea of a wind out sunshade to keep the entrance area clear. With your skills Jon, I think the build your own route is definitely worth investigation. Either on an LT, or even something bigger like a Crafter. You could make something which is good to look at and great to get in and go.

The thing is not to go too big tho Paul as they then become unparkable!

Very true!! I guess that's a problem I have never considered since it's not a problem with a T3!

This is one of our concerns, alot of the places we visit are in deepest Wales where the roads are narrow at the best of times and parking very limited

Nice one! Buy a good one and your investment will be safe, so even if it doesn`t work out you`ll recover your money; What are you looking at, Puck, Familia, or something bigger? Keep us informed.
