I'm gona put a 1.9td AAZ from a vento in my van,I dunno much about them but my engine gave up and this was cheap. What are people's thoughts?
Is anyone else like me in that the smell of P38 filler makes them alarmingly turgid?

good aaz is nice to drive but lacks the torque of a tdi or mtdi
it`s a big round cage but there`s too many animals in it for my liking.to address this ring lee on 07977 765818.

Good engine but do run a bit hot in a t3.. Easiest option for replacing a jx but you still need lots of JX parts so I assume you are 1.6 td now?

Personally I hate AAZ engines. Back in the day I witnessed dozens of the things throw their crank pulleys with predictable results.
By now I suspect any remaining ones have been rebuilt with the later modified and updated bottom pulleys and bolts, so the chances of one self detonating is probably slim;
Enough of a chance for me to steer clear of the things for ever though.

Well yes....that can happen but its cause is the alternator belt setup and there is a vw fix or use the JX setup. If in doubt check it but should be ok.

Well aware what the cause was. Like I said, I was there back in the day dealing with the carnage caused, and scrapping otherwise perfect cars that just weren't worth fixing with new engines and couldn't be fixed with used engines as there just weren't enough to go around. It was a sad state of affairs that sticks in your mind a bit.

Have you sought counselling for this Beelzibus? it sounds like you really went through a tough time, and you need some kind of closure?Big smile

AAZ's are fine Cornish van rat. Just spend a bit of time and money before you put it in, and do the install right. It'll be okay.
Polo 1.9D(it's reliable)

Caravelle GL AFN tdi(I loved it, but it's gone)

I would have no hesitation fitting another AAZ if the need arises, other than the head gasket going almost immediately after fitting (I suspect a pre existing problem), we have now gone 3 years and a further 20,000 miles without incident. Fit the 80 degree thermostat and the gauge should never go beyond midpoint other than very long inclines.
I presume your starting from a JX so have all the relevant parts to swap over?

AAZ is a good and simple step up from the 1.6d, mine's combined with a DK (2.0 aircooler) gear box and has been a stalwart in service. I get 70 on the m-way and 80 if I grit my teeth and ask nicely. Is at its best on the national speed limit roads. Its very similar to the old lump and easy to fit, wire up and generally understand. That isnt to say I dont dream of a tdi and a flipped audi gearbox, but you'll need thick bucks and time to burn to achieve that! Ive done probably 20k with this setup (it had done over 150k when I bought it) and its been problem free. Not running any extra cooling, or any extra boost. just a rover boost pin. No sign of it overheating at all, always remains stable and does enough to power up hills in 4th gear (even when its packed to the roof), but as mentioned by others, not astounding performance compared to the modern lumps.

I have been running an aaz for the past two  years odd put new cam belt kit on checked the front pulley set up all ok there , new alt etc and fully serviced pulls realy well up to 60ish dont push past there will do it no probs but dont want to overrevv etc ! also pull a folding camper (750 kg ) and two/three of us and will sit at 60 mph on the motorway no probs ( big hills not included lol ) so happy with that ! Tdi be nice but dont have funds for that as its off rd stripped to bits having a full repaint at mo maybe next year for Tdi ! i should say its not tweaked or anything not got extra cooler and stays right where it should do on the temp gauge but did flush rad out and check water system was doing its job first before towing etc !
