Has anyone had success with connecting the VW distance sensor (VSS sensor) signal direct to a TDI ECU ?
In the original vehicles, the sensor connects to the instrument cluster (for the speedo) which generates the vehicle speed signal which is then used by the engine ECU and other systems. So there's a possibility that the VSS signal is actually different to the raw signal from the distance sensor. Hope this makes sense.. |

Howdo, on my wiring all the vss wires go to TV13 whick is a common node for all things road speed including thedash, radio, and engine ecu, there is a value block for kph in the engine ecu somewhere as well to check it somewhere near but i guess and speed shown will be maintained by the ccs

if it does under read...would it matter? the CCS will try and sustain the speed it sees and wont know if its right or wrong....im only guessing as not done it but maybe.

The vss that I have seen and used are a 2 wire type which I rig up to a control box that gives a digital signal that the ecu can read.
This control box has a live, earth, 2 feeds in from sensor and 1 digital signal out. Easy to wire up. There are (3 wire) hall sensors, fitted to some buses but not seen one first hand to confirm. As you say the cruise control will be happy to maintain the given speed, unless maybe it goes below the given minimum speed. Not sure if this is the case with VW cruise.

i think it does go off below a certain speed but its quite low...however a mega low cruise might be handy for offroading maybe...maybe not! but just to be able to hold at 60 on the motorway with my feet up will do for me!

I think I wasn't clear enough in my OP, I was referring to the so-called 'distance sensor' which screws to the gearbox on Mk3 Golf etc for their electric speedo. The reason I'm interested in these is that I'm considering fitting the Passat cluster at some point.
I think you guys are talking about the senders which fit to the back of the T3 speedo housing, similar shape units seen on Mk2 Golfs with MFA. There are two versions of these, a 2-pin inductive sender, and a 3-pin Hall sender. The T3 CCS used the 2-pin inductive sender. I had a 3-pin sender lying about, pn. 321 907 345 A, from an early Mk2 GTi. I fitted it earlier today, hooked it up to the TDI ECU, and via Scanguage got a credible vehicle speed, albeit about 10% under the real speed (via GPS). Not a problem with the Scanguage as you can apply a compensation factor. The TDI ECU also has a compensation setting, albeit of a limited range, I'll look at that as well. |

hi...got one here with 3 pins but its a "B" suffix part number..did you just solder some wires to the tags to connect it up?

I think the 'B' suffix is OK too, according to Google. On the Golf cluster IIRC it connects via flexi PCB. I prised open the hinged back of the sender and removed the flexi PCB, then soldered on some fine wires to the contacts. I'll check which is which tomorrow and let you know.

Just tried to fit it...the B suffix part is not ok, it jams the inner "needle" ring so the speedo wont read, its a motometer part and the clocks are VDO so maybe thats the difference with A and B part numbers? i should have a VDO one kicking about somewhere i reckon...what make is your sender..the A one?
