Dear brick-yard,
i am hoping someone can help me.  for some reason recently my van has been shuddering when i drive.  this happens particularly when the vehicle is under load.  i have read on an American forum (for their utes etc) that it could be something to do with the engine mounts.  i have checked mine and all are looking well with the rubbers not perished etc,

my next suggestion i thought would have been bad fuel or an injector problem but when driving without the engine cover on i had plenty of power driving up a steep hill (so much so that i have considered driving without the cover on more often!)

The gearbox has an oil leak through the reverse switch but this was fixed recently (plugged using a type 2 gearbox switch)

the only thing i can think of is the driveshaft being out of balance.

Can anyone provide a clue where to start please?

Many thanks

k

if your truck is LWB you'll have a centre prop s haft bearing,my bet is that it is u/s get under and pull the prop about look for shredded rubber. If not ,could be clutch but check prop first.Hope to be in Flemington (near race track)next year visiting the rellies.good luck.

My guess would be either the prop main centre rubber bearing or one of the prop UJ's is on its way out.

Hand brake on and in neutral, a good push/pull/twist on all prop joints should show play..........

Moved this to tech where it should be.
As above almost certainly prop/bearing related, but when underneath also check for play where the prop enters the gearbox, possible bearing issue.

Thanks guys,
Ive got underneath and have yanked pulled pushed etc the drive shaft.  it would appear i have an LWB van as i have the rubber mount splitting the shaft in two.
all seem well except there is one worn union on the universal joint nearest the axle.
now comes the hard part where ill need a little help please.  I'm in Australia where these vans were never released so parts are non existent (i'm using rubber mounts from a Mitsubishi Magna on my anti roll bar!!!) but i digress.  is anyone aware of the technical sizes of the UJ.  I've been to VW here who can only provide me with a part number for a full shaft and they're now obsolete anyway.

i am of the opinion if i can get the lengths, and cap width of the UJ i could buy another here to replace the worn one.  I would take it off and do to myself but need the vehicle for work.  if i can get the right size, i can order it and remove/replace in a day.

Thank you

I've had a look here http://nemiga.com/cat_spares/etka/volkswagen/lt/6/059000/
and there is no separate part no, it's the whole shaft or nothing as you posted.
Best option I think is for you to find an engineering shop who can weld on a new uj from a similar size vehicle, and then balance the shaft.

There have been a few who have replaced the bearings only with 'farm shop' items. As long as you have the sizes you should be able to manage.
If the joint has worn then AndyTs' solution is the way, sadly.

Hi kamikazi, Google Bailey Morris of St neots UK,prop shafts and related stuff is their specialist subject, they offer international service,if you can't sort it out locally then give them a look, also Propshaft Clinic ,Bradford, looks like they might help. Good luck.

The UJ consists of clips and bearings.......drop a bearing out and get the part number of it and order some to replace them......

Does this help? This ad says it's 27x80mm.
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Kreuzgelenk-Kardanwelle-VW-LT-bis-1996-Hyundai-Galloper-27x80mm-Schmiernippel-/181256321351?hash=item2a33b7f947:g:GvsAAOSwMmBV0zYD

It seems the same 27x88mm is also used for Merc Sprinter / VW LT MKII & Crafters too.
Check by size on this UK webshop:
http://driveshaftparts.co.uk/index.php?route=product/category&path=90

I've seen a few different sizes being touted for Mk1 LT's on ebay from Germany, France & Poland.
Forgive my ignorance but can't you check it with a pair of calipers without pulling it off? At least to get an idea before buying.

Shame on VW for not providing the dimensions or even a mention of this part given it's importance. Shocked
Got six of these buggers on my truck and they don't look like the greasable type either.

Update:

thank you all for the advice and assistance.  Ive got it sorted locally.  The final UJ near the rear axle was properly  stuffed; this has since been cut off and a new one welded on in its place.  smooth running from here on in.  cheers all

Great news Smile, hope it wasn't too expensive as it was the only practical solution.
