We have a towbar on our LT35 that was fitted when we bought it, it's a bit of a Heath Robinson affair and I was going to strengthen it up before using it to tow my trailer, however seeing that the new MOT tests are now looking at modifications to towbars I was wondering if anyone knows where you can buy a proper towbar. The only ones I can find seem to be for the later LT's of 1996 onwards.

If it ain't broken don't try an fix it. If it is broken it's probably an early LT.

The new section in the MOT Manual is this:
"A towbar assembly inappropriately repaired or modified such that it is likely to adversely affect the roadworthiness of the vehicle/trailer combination."

So providing you can weld OK, it shouldn't be an issue. I would guess most places don't bother listing the early LTs any more as there are so few around, but have you tried ringing somewhere like Towsure?
Mid engined, 6 cylinder, turbocharged 2 seater - it can only be a VW LT!

Thanks for that guys.
Yes my welding is pretty good (nothing has ever fell off yet anyway) but I may still invest in a proper one to make it a tidy job.

Thanks for the links, don't know why I didn't try the fleabay myself, ;-)

intresting the mot rules....guess you could still make your own towbar if you wanted and its the opinion of the tester if its fit for purpose or not...but shitty welds can be strong and pretty welds can be weak!
