I thought I would change the gearbox oil on my van since it's hit the 50K mark now.  Does anyone know the correct oil and amount for a 174?  I had to buy the new socket I'll need to get the drain plug out.  The 1.9s just have the familliar VW large allen size plug but the 2.5's need a 'security spline' tool (M16 I think it was).

Is there something I should know I wonder, or have I just been mugged for yet another special tool? Ouch

You have been mugged mate, it is the same one as the one I have for doing the camshaft, could have borrowed it for free! Still got the receipt?

Thanks for the offer LF. Thumbs Up  I don't mind owning  the socket though so I'll hang on to it.  I just wondered why VW thought gearbox drain and level plugs needed tamperproofing!

Rumour has it that all new Audis and VWs come with sump plugs that have the same security bolt to try to keep everything main dealer. My sump plug is a spark plug as my mate used the wrong sized helicoil when fixing it :D

I was wondering about transmission oil too.. I guess that the quantities are fill untill it flows out of the filler but the grade of oil we'll have to find... I have a buddy who specialises in VWs so I'll ask if he can find out for us..

Some don't have any sump plug at all, it has to be sucked out.  Tastes terrible! Big smile LOL
