I spotted one of these today heading down the A37 Shepton mallet area south west UK.
Who was the builder?

Well the body on ours was built by Ifor Williams, but the vehicle itself was originally a refrigerated van. I've seen a few proper coachbuilt horseboxes as well mind.

A few years ago there was a VW garage on the A3 just below Hindhead. It had all sorts there - as well as the usual campers there was a fire engine and a crane van which looked like it could have been used to install telegraph poles. Sadly all were in pretty poor condition which is probably why it closed.

There must be other VW's that were built for specialist roles though, or doesn't anyone here own one or is no-one interested in anything other than the standard buses?

I thinks that there should be a place to host the unusual one off's and quirky coach built options. The only time you see this stuff is at van fest (bus fest now)
I even remember seeing some military assault vehicles based on the T2. Desert storm stuff.

I've got a T3 that was converted for use as a jet starter at Madeira airport. Converted by Garrett, it had a jet engine installed in the back to start the engines on jumbos using a big airhose coming through the front panel.

This is a later van in white, there are vents on the roof and the interior had a custom bulkhead and full insulation.

And mine, now with the vent box put back on the roof.

And sadly minus the jet engine. Cry

Just found another one, this one okks like it's brand new. Extra brackets were welded on the bottom of the  front chassis members to fit the front gear.
