if keeping the alternator belt spring tensioner system on ahu has anyone converted the water pump to run on the multi groove belt rather than having two separate belts. cheers lee.

Yup, i got a pulley that is same as the AAZ, it's flat (not grooved), think there was an 'F' or an 'E' on the end of the part #, can get the part# tonight if I go visit my project van down the barn where it lives tonight after work.

The grooves run along the pulley rather than the back of the belt which I thought was odd, but apparently thats the way it's done.

Pics below should help explain.

Original setup on my AHU had powersteering and air con:

Now with removed P/s and A/C:
Note you want to make sure you get the right length belt because if it's too long, then the tensioner will push the returning side of the belt towards the pump pulley and it will just jam up (dashed line), the gap on mine is mm's so I need to get a shorter one. I think my belt part # had a 'T' on the end of it, I'll try and find in my 'filing system' what my options were at the time of purchase (ages ago)

Note mine isn't running yet, but it's all sound and an actual VW option so I have no reason to doubt the effectiveness - hence why I've gone this route Big smile

Brent

Lee, additionally to this. Have you seen the clutched alternator pulley you can get? Reported to take all the slop out of the drive belt.

Ive been after one for mine for a while, just not got round to searching one out.
All the part numbers for the pulley and required tools are on the following thread in case you felt like chatting with your suppliers TongueWink

Here she be. as i mentioned, belt is a tad too long Ouch
Vag-Cat says:
028903137BB (EUR24)
ribbed v-belt / for alternator:
21,36X1045MM 120A / 1Z,AFN,AEY; AAZ; PR-SK5:1Y
there must be a shorter one but I can't scour vagcat all day in work Embarrassed

I think if you were to get a clutched alt as vlux says, and do away with the tensioner then you'd need a different alt mount as there is no adjustment for tensioning the belt in this current setup (fixed mounting bolts on alt)

Brent

bit more scouting... seems I have the right belt but the tensioner pulley wheel is a bit large, and the gap is literally mms as you can see from the picture, any thrashing of belt and there will be rubbage, don't want to lose water pump with engine running!

ah it's all coming back to me now... that's why the 1Z is still firmly in 'project' mode Embarrassed
cue a mad rush for people hunting down non-A/C alt mounts and ALH pulley wheels LOL
still think there is an option for a slightly smaller belt which should do the same trick, may try EKTA tonight

I've used the AAZ alternator bracket, doing away with the tensioner pulley (and aircon mount) means I can run a much shorter belt however, I feel it needs the clutched pulley to help with belt flap.

Just a thought....

Hey Lee how'd you get on with this after? I'm getting annoyed with the 'belt flappage' and slight squeel on my AAZ, called VW and clutched pulley 028-903-119AA was £85.64!! anywhere cheaper possibly... GSF?
Cheers,
Brent

Clutched alt pullys available from most good motor factors you dont have to pay that sort of money. Different water pump pully I bought from vw but was not expensive. It may be an option to pick up a s/h high amp alternator with pully included. I'm going to try the aux belt system with the spring tensioner as you often get issues with the AAZ alt drive system.

yeah, the belt flap on the AAZ setup when running is quite a lot considering how tight it is, I don't want to overdo it otherwise it'll stress out the alt and water pump bearings too much, good to know I don't have to fork out too much dosh for it, providing part number should at least give me a good chance of getting the right one for the job Thumbs Up

I'll stick with the spring tensioner on my 1Z too, did you get a larger (ALH) one of those aswel or haven't you got there yet?
Cheers,

Good call on the bump. Can anyone confirm that 'AA' suffix for the freewheel pulley to suit the compact 'AAZ/1Y' bracket/alt?

lee is your pulley ribbed? I've ordered the part number in your pics but it's a smooth pulley that's identical to the one already in situ on my afn? Confused now....
