vac pump noise would be there at idle " or it was with my mates years ago " pump the break and it should go away if it does then you can be reasonably sure thats what it is.

Valves are basic and have shims, no hydraulic lifters to be found here.....

Sorry to take the thread off at a tangent, but I was of the impression that the valves DID have hydraulic tappets...certainly I get a regular tappet noise that comes and goes, fitting the symptoms of a sticky tappet. Also, Euro Car Parts list a hydraulic tappet for the LT engine, here: http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Volkswagen_LT_2.4_1993/p/Car-Parts/Engine-Parts/Engine-Parts/Cam-and-Valve-Train
I don't want to sound like an authority on the subject (I'm not!), since I've never had one of the engines apart (yet!) Maybe there are (earlier?) variants with the bucket and shim adjustment, certainly IMO a more reliable way of adjusting valves given the amount of soot ending up in the oil, wouldn't take many missed oil changes to lead to a sticky tappet...
Mid engined, 6 cylinder, turbocharged 2 seater - it can only be a VW LT!

Interesting. It states the years as 82 > 93 as well.
I've had three engines inside these years and all were the same non hydraulic format.
Whip the rocker cover off and have a look if in any doubt.

Ok I know its a long shot but woild love to know what it was? I am having the exact same issue with mine and I was adamant its the vacuum pump but now I got a bit confused. Also only having the noise under load so my other suspect would be the Turbo but I dont even want to think about that...
