Topic: T5 Service Posted: 30 Apr 07 at 12:58 |
We bought a 12 month old T5 Shuttle bus this time last year and converted it into a camper van. It had done 11,000 miles when we got it and now has 14,500 miles. We only use the van during the summer months and then drive for max fuel economy. This week we had a letter from the VW dealership to say that it must be serviced. It is on a long life service and we did not expect to have this done until about 20,000 miles which would be about this time next year.
Should we pay nearly £300 to have the oil changed when the service light has not come on and the engine uses no oil at all? The dealer does not have any slots for service free for two or three weeks when we shall be away on holiday. We want to leave it until about September when we might have reached the 20,000mile mark.
What advice would you offer. The brake fluid I shall change myself as with all the other vehicles I have owned.

The Sticker in my van window when I got it said service @ 18,000 miles or on March 2009
Personally I would get VW to it for you while it’s still in warrantee, you might save a couple of hundred pounds but if something went turbo ETC might you run the risk of VW saying it’s not been serviced correctly therefore we do not accept this as warrantee work

I find this long life business pretty confusing , i don't know if i should be long life or not as i've only done about 10,000 in the year i've had it.
If you have scheduled servicing for lower mileages don't you need a different oil?

Its 18kmiles or 2yrs for longlife service. The longlife service is variable. I believe the sensor/sensors on or around the engine give the ECU info regarding use and condition of oil before starting a coundown indicator 2k before service is due. Assuming you're within 2yrs and the service indicator hasnt started the countdown then I wouldnt worry yet. My vehicle use is mainly around town and the service indicator starts at about 13k for 15k service. (I'm just coming to the end of 2nd service indicator at 30.5k). Some on here have reported no service indicator at20k.

Mine came in at 15000,apparentley the critical point is to keep the oil level at maximum.

I bought my T5 with 11500 on the clock and fractionally over 2 years old. The previous owner told me at exactly 2 years to the day, with 11200 on the clock the service light came on.

I'd shop around a bit, my first service at just under 20,000 was less than £200.

The thing is that dealer systems are set up to send service reminders at regular intervals. With long life servicing there has to be a bit of guess work as to when to send them. It's called predictive marketing.
Most dealers will tell you if you try to book a longlife van in when the light isn't on, but one or two may try to take advantage.
With dash mounted service reminder lights you could argue there is no need for these letters, but dealers need to stay in the customers mind, service managers need to be seen to be trying to keep the ramps full, and ther'll always be some numpty who'll try and sue the dealer if they forget a service and something goes bang.

Van Rouge, Longlife service should be 20k ish miles - you'll be fine if you wait for your service light especially if its not using any oil - I had to top up twice in the first 20k miles (but not since). My van has nearly done done 60k and I've had it serviced every 20k (ish) - it's on longlife, not variable, so I rely on the service light and mileometer - but that doesn't stop me getting regular letters from my f**kwit dealer ( ) trying to rob more money from me! And on my last visit they had no idea about when my warranty ran out - let alone when my next service was due!

Thanks for your advice. I shall wait until the service light comes on. No point in having the expensive long life oil otherwise. In the service book there is nowhere to record a brake fluid change. When my wife had the fluid changed on her Polo the book was not stamped.

Van Rouge,
Out of interest, which Van Centre couldn't fit in a service of over 2 weeks?
