Most likely driveshaft splines.  Don't forget to replace the stub axle coming out of the gearbox as well.

Another possibilty is the DMF ?  Can take out clutch and even gearbox housing when it goes

The AA said most likely clutch as towed ok . When put in gear all ok but take foot off clutch and it won't drive just rumbles .😑

Please let us know what it was when you get it fixed.

But my money is still on stripped driveshaft splines - VW had them especially made of a poor quality "chocolate metal" to drive their profit margins up by selling lots of spares, and the extra mechanical work kept the dealers happy too !

There ya go !  Thumbs Up

Helpful hint - get those splines well greased to help them last longer.  VW make a special grease, but some say any old heavy sticky grease will do.
