Hello all,

I'm looking to buy a used T4 or a T5 van and having read some of the topics on this site am not sure what to do, I would appreciate any advice on the reliability of these vehicles and what your opinions are, I don't want this for a buisness just private use, I really had decided on a VW Transporter due to the size being just about right and the looks of the vehicle but am now having second thoughts.

Thank you

Hi Chad, & welcome!

We've run T4's and T5's and I'd say definately go for the T5; it's so much more modern and if you choose the right spec it will be pretty reliable. Consensus seems to be that the smaller four pot/five speed box models are more robust so maybe look for a 102/104 with some warranty left? Best place to look probably VW main website or sometimes easier Autotrader. Let us know how you get on......

I felt the same but have gone for the 102 with plenty of warranty left as the T5 looks more pleasing to the eye than the T4 in my opinion. It depends on budget I went for as new as possible and comprimised on gizmo's as I will only do about 5k a year and its not my daily drive."I have gone from T3 to T5 and missed out on the middle man"

I have just changed from a 9 year old T4 camper to a T5. Although the power outputs are about the same the 5 cylinder of the T4 was a bit smoother but overall the T5 is quieter. The T4 has a softer ride but I think the T5 handles better.

I had no mechanical problems at all with the T4. Hopefully the T5 will give as good service.

Definately go for a VW and I also agree that the 1.9TDI engine has been well proved in the T4 - so combine the reliable engine with the up-to-date looks and you've got to ago for the
T5  (85/104ps)

.....or NOTTINGHAM VAN CENTRE, they were simply dreadful. Hopefully most people turn around when they see the premises (no showroom, portacabins for an office, an almost unbelievable waiting area, and a handful of grease monkey's that would be safer stacking shelves....
