Hi, I have a T4 that lacks power & brings engine warning light on intermittantly. It has been checked on VAGcom & has two codes to do with needle injector (will post print out codes when I find em)
My question is this, is the needle injector no. 4 injector (the one with wire to it, for the comencement of injection), if so anyone had any previous problems of this type?
Will post exact codes ASAP, know I'm being a little bit vague.
Many thanks in advance for any replies
Paul

If the engine doesn't know when injection commences, it doesn't know how to set the timing, so it will go into limp (light on, reduced power) and use readings from other sensors to guess what should be happening to get you home.
Changes are that there is a poor connection when the 2 pin connector bolts to the block with the rest of the wires below the injection pump.
Chances are the codes are that the signal is implasuable (meaning the ECU doesn't understand what is being sent from the sensor, the readiongs are out of the range it's programmed to expect)
Other possible one is that the signal is open/short circuit to positive/earth.
That means you have a poor electrical connection, so as above check that plug below the injection pump.

I've got exactly this problem but the connection seems fine. The sensor reads 114 ohms which is within range but I get the 17653 intermittent error code. The sensor is integral to the injector. The injector only seems to be available from VW for €500. Anyone know of a more reasonable solution?

Just been through this with my own AJT engined caravelle.

Dash light on intermittently, sometimes for a few days, then off for weeks, lately on permanently. Fault codes showed needle-sensor problem. Local diesel specialist suggested changing injector no.4 - the one with the sensor. This has been a problem on and off since I bought the bus a couple of years ago, so I decided to bite the bullet and fix it properly. New injector cost approx £200 inc. vat from aforementioned diesel guy - genuine exchange unit Stanadyne injector. Took out the old one, fitted the new one myself - a couple of hours, fairly easy. Result: dash light off, bus runs much better, more power. Expensive, but at least I know that it's fixed now. Worth checking all the electrical connections before going down the replacement route though, in case it's something simple.

Also recently took the inlet manifold off to clean out the crud, after cleaning the inlet elbow and blanking the EGR about 6 months ago. Fiddly job, but it' s made a hell of a difference to how the thing drives. And it was a cheap fix - about £5 for a new gasket plus about 6 hours getting covered in black filth.

Now i just need to get the other injectors tested, maybe rebuilt or replaced, and the heap of junk should run really well.....
Oh, and do the wheel bearings. And dampers. And clutch. And respray. Is there anything on the bus that's good?

Excellent to hear that swapping out just that injector helped a lot. I was worried that all the injectors would need cleaning. Now I just need to find a better supplier here than VW. Funnily enough I've also got rear wheel bearing issues. Quite tricky to work out which side (van with division) as they don't make any noise or wobble when I jack them up and test them.
I also did the EGR blank off a while back but I didn't clean anything out.... I can feel a weekend project coming on.
Thanks for the reply.

Cleaning out the inlet elbow (the section on top of the manifold which has the egr and anti-shudder valve in) is an easy job and made a huge difference to the way my bus drove. Mind you, it did have 250,000 miles of crud built up inside it. Cleaning the inlet manifold was a different kettle of fish - a real bugger to remove, and worse to clean. You can see into the manifold once you've got the inlet elbow off and get some idea of how gunged up it is, or not.

Cheers Bodfish, I'll try the elbow first and hopefully that'll be enough as I've only done 100,000 miles.

Bit the bullet, ordered a sensor injector from VW UK for £236 inc, half the price that it is here. I know it's a  rubbish Stanadyne but like this I won't need a remap again. I also did the Vagcom Injected quantity test and the number 4 sensor injector was needing more fuel also (+1.85) so hopefully it'll run a bit better too. I'll probably buy the other 4 injectors eventually and do the L200 intercooler Mod just to get the temperatures down and maybe get less smoke.
