Not sure who Neil is. SA as in South Africa?

This came from Syncrospares in Devon. Not sure how they came about it.

Any info would be great though as its always interesting hearing a bit of history about them.

Cheers

Well they're not new rules, they're existing rules that historically haven't been enforced very well. There have been random cases of very strict enforcement though of late. Typically vehicles have come to DVLA/Vosa's attention for some reason, often no plate transfers, have been puled in for inspection, and during inspection, mods have come to light that they've decided compromise the rules. Vehicles have lost existing IDs and owners have then been forced to comply with BIVA test. To be fair, in the case of most T3s this shouldn't pose too much of a problem.
But in essence yes the regs are in place and are being enforced.

Thanks Guys, I really like it and cost noting near my original budget so still have cash in the bank for a little trip to France in September to try it out. Mind you looking at the news this morning i should have got a boat!

I did make a compromise on the roof for now, but it will look great with a pop on it when I decide to do it and have a solid base now from which to build my ultimate bomb/child proof camper. Fair point about the westy interior, guess thats my compromise for my mrs being able to drive me home from the pub (RHD).

Priorities always change and i guess its being able to respond to these that is the challenge - i never thought i would be buying a brick in the first place. I just don't want to look like all the other cheque book T5 surf/camper at out local breaks. Can't wait to see there faces, though i am sure i will take some shit LOL

The 4x4 overhaul will check the diffs, VC etc.

Not finished yet, needs its new paint job finishing, plan to fit with 15" steels and some BFG AT tyres
It has a basic camper interior that I can upgrade to westy later on if needed and if I get fed up with the high top I can always fit a pop top later down the line. Having the 4x4 overhauled and a new clutch fitted. New firdge Rock and Roll bed etc going in. fRont and rear diffs are all good. Its a RHD, and 2.1 petrol so think i might need to chuck in a scooby engine at some point also but I have been good with my budget so have allowed for this. It will be ready end July when the bay has been sold, can't wait! Big smile I know its nothing like I started looking at but this just felt so goood!

Here's a Syncro Caravelle that I know,
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-T3-T3-SYNCRO-CARAVELLE-CL-2-1inj-/320546948410?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item4aa216453a
I don't know who has it now, I do know that recently it has had a couple of owners, but that aside it's a good van with a great spec, ideal I'd have thought to turn into a camper, especially as it's a sunroof van.
As far as the other subject goes, lets just say that my Syncro Westy is not the only van I own.

Q plate is reserved for any vehicle (not just kitcars) where the identity of said vehicle comes into question. As far as the rules are concerned you must have 8 points to retain a vehicles ID before mods put that id into question. You get 5 points for an unmodified chassis or in the case of a T3 the monocoque. If you can't get those 5 points because you've grafted in a roof, or modded the front of the chassis for a Syncro front subframe then it's game over.Assuming you have the 5, then you need another 3, made up from any of the following, axles, transmission, steering, suspension, engine. You get 2 points for each category bar the engine which gets just one. So if all your suspension is OG that's 2 points. If both axles are OG that's another 2, so no probs with an engine and box change, plus a PAS upgrade for example. However turn a 2wd into a Syncro and you're dead in the water, hence the best way to go is to start with a Syncro and convert that into a camper.

As far as the implications go, well first off if you can't ake the 8 points for whatever reason you need to pass a BIVA, the SVA replacement, so there's cost involved and everything has to be upto spec, as I said earlier with a T3 this shouldn't really cause any problems because it already has things like a collapsable steering column, safe switches a soft steering wheel, belts and the like. However insurance companies don't like Q plates much, and typically they're worth less than comparable vehicles.
