Hi,

Experiencing intermittent problems with power steering on a lhd 16. Steering has become heavier and appears to feed back when the wheel is turned, not always, when it does happen the 'feedback' varies in severity?
I am wondering if it might be a port in the rack being blocked, perhaps by a foreign body? I did replace the front to back pressure and return pipes some time ago with flexible hydraulic pipes.
Another development, (related or not?) is that the steering action has become a little elliptical.
Tracking and tyres all good (standard width), other half assures me that she hasn't run into/over anything (during the what actually happened/exactly what are the symptoms 'interrogation')!
Anyone out there had a problem such as this with their power steering, is so any clues?

Many thanks

usually problems with power steering working but feeling poor or feedback or roughness is due to worn UJ in th elinkage between the steering relay box and the rack, brickwerks sell a refurbished exchange item usually but people are bad at returning units so delay can occur

thanks Aidan,
Think the uj might explain the ellipical feel with the steering.
The feedback issue might well be unrelated, at one point the steering was difficult to move off the central point.
When actually off centre line steering would try to centre again quite noticably, rather than remain at the desired steering angle....hope that makes sense?!
I thought at first that the other half had driven over a cow or small car, couldn't think of an alternative diagnosis at the time!
Tracking was adjusted and problem appeared to have been solved....until now that is.
That's why I have arrived at the rack possibly being the cause, someting circulating in the system although the reservoir does have the correct filter fitted?
Cheers Stirling

Had same problem - as Adian says uj was the culprit. try wd40ing it to see if improves to confirm, then get new one. Heavy surcharge when buying new one - but rightly so to get em back.

If the steering gets heavy on slow speeds, like when you park, try to raise the engine RPM's a bit, if in improve you might have a problem with you pump. But also check the filter.

Also check the rubber bushes and bolt that secure the rack to the chassis, if worn the rack "shift" and it influence the steering circle and alignment.
