steering colum again!

   i have put a good 2nd han colum on my van and it has the vw golf 4 button wheel,its was ok for a bit, but the play has returned, i have tapped the black sleeve down and this sorted it for a bit, but it  came back again, i then zip clipped the rubber mount which the 2 prongs go through, at the bottom of the colum, but tonight it returned,any pointer as to where i went wrong, i now have to pull the wheel up to engage the steering lock(about 4mm) the indicator cancelling is ok though
any ideas?
