Strange look to go for.
With a car looking like that my interpretation is the owner is saying "Check me out bro, I pulled a fat bird and she bust my suspension" Each to their own I suppose, but back when I was chasing da biatches we went for thinner girls, as chillin with the big munters was best avoided. This was a requirement when driving Mk1 and 2 Ford Escorts and Capris with the front struts only being held down by the bonnet due to excessive rusting of the inner wings. Oh, and just for reference with regard to historical natural selection / attraction and evolutionary principles of that era: My Mk1 Capri 1.6 GT XLR was modified with 2.0 Pinto, RS 3.1 wings & rear arches, RS front and rear spoilers, and also wheelly importantly had 7.5" RS X pack alloys (correct PCD ) and 225/60 13 Yokohamas with no "stretch" or "scene camber". It pulled many a fine damsel to test the Bilstein suspension. |

Wow, what an odd thread!
How I see it... Old, yes, experienced.. Well, I suppose so. Thing is buddy, there's a lot of folk on this forum that actually know what they are on about. You've come along and asked for some help, which you've been given then you have totally disregarded what people have said. So, why bother posting in the first place if you didn't want to hear what you were told. You are trying to fit some wheels with the wrong PCD. However large you drill out the holes in the wheel, the centre of the bolt hole in the wheel will never change, yes you may be able to physically fit the wheel over the studs but the holes could be 30mm in diameter but the PCD would still be the same. If you didn't know PCD means pitch circle diameter, a theoretical circle drawn through the centre of each bolt hole, regardless of the size of the hole. I'll presume that you don't understand how a wheel fits so I'll have to patronise you briefly. The idea of the radiused or tapered seat it to allow the wheel to centre on the hub. On a T3 there is no central spigot so the wheel relies on the taper of the wheel fixings. When you nip up a wheel fixing it starts the centring process, in theory once you nip the second fixing up the wheel should be central on the hub, this is because the hub fixings and the holes in the wheel share the same PCD. So, when you fit a wheel of the wrong PCD it will not centre on the hub correctly, when spun you will see it turning off centre. Obviously this isn't good, I have very little experience of fitting wrong PCD wheels as I'm not that daft, but I should imagine that you would get a lot of vibration and the tyre wear will be more in one spot than the other, I should also think it will have a detrimental effect on the lifespan of the dampers. And wheel bearings. I would like to know which college you went to or even if you are qualified because this is pretty basic stuff for a "mechanic" I'm not saying don't do your own thing, to be honest it's pretty boring seeing loads of samey vans at shows but if you are modifying things then please do it safely eh. It's not just you on the road, there are others out there too. As for the load rating on a tyre, yep, fair enough a empty T3 may only weigh as much as a family car, however it has the potential to carry much much more, I think most T3 have. 1200kg front axle limit and a 1300kg rear axle limit, that's 2.5 tonnes all up, so you must make sure your tyres are suited to the potential weight it could carry. You have a bump and you have the wrong load rating on your tyres your screwed, one of the first things insurance assesors check are the tyres. If you want some respect on here go and build a nice van and people may treat you a little differently, be a pioneer, build something individual and show off your skills, have a look at "booteds" van or "madmatts", "Rob M", "VWnerd" or "busboy" these guys are showing off skills not fashion. |

I've been away a bit and have missed this fantastic thread. Did someone mention tyre load ratings?

had the bolt seats re-set 1.15 mm inward.
to make them 5x112 and suited to t3/t4 bolts (i like to use t4/sharan bolts on the front)
they are smaller radius than standard t3 nuts/bolts so the machine shop guy didnt need to machine the bolt seat much deeper .
imagine a for eg. a 20mm circle inside a 24mm circle.
when i test fitted them i found i still needed spacers mine were et 41 fronts /et 47 rear.
(there are a few different specs for this wheel type).
ive seen full sets of 8j.
8.5 and 9.5.
and 8.0 and 10.0
so i think they must have made offsets for different cars.
i do remember the back face of the centres was very different from front to rear.
i sold them as i had too much money invested in them to then start plying with spacers and longer bolts.. and i would rather have wheels i can bolt on directly.
think they are now fitted to a mk4 golf on adaptors.. that was some 5 years ago

Cool. I only have £300 in them and feel that once fitted it will of been worth the extra cost and messing.
But to be fare we're still a little away yet!! Cheers |
