Hi all. Had the van jacked up at the rear recently, and routinely gave the wheel a rock from bottom to top. Noticed quite a bit of play in both sides. Thought to meself "Aye aye .... Wheel bearings knackered". Went to see my mechanic, who turned me away ! He said he doesn't like working on Transporters as they're a pain. Reccomended me to another guy. Went to see him, .....he told me that he'd need the van for a couple of days, as its a nightmare job to do. He's fully booked for 3 weeks, and told me to wait until the M.O.T in June ! Basically, I think he didn't want to do it. Why is it so difficult to get rear wheel bearings done on a T3 ? Is this a real nightmare job or something ?

All to do with the 46mm rear hub nut probably. 46mm socket, cracker bar,4-5 foot length of scaffold tube and someone jumping on the end of that lot who has an healthy appetite for pies. It's tight. Edited by g60steve |

And I ain't no professional mechanic. Let me know if you want more info, happily fill you in on how it all went. or pm me and I'll give you my number. No probs. |

The second Guy I spoke to said something about the Drive Shafts have to come off ......., and then you have to approach them from the back. I take the point that they're gonna be tight. I guess its essential for them to be. But is it really a two day job to replace both rear wheel bearings ? Why do all the mechanics I've spoke to go white with fear when I mention them ? I feel like I've been palmed off ! If he didn't want to do it, why not just say ?

Or you could cut into the nut on both sides with a grinder...don't cut into the threads!! Then chisel it off and fit a new nut after you've completed what needs doing....very tightly.

Why do they palm you off well.... Fear of the unknown Haven't got the tools (socket and scafold tube) Cus it's old (which means it will be seized and dirty) Cus it's a van so generally harder and more physical work Cus things like brake pipe unions are going to be seized and rounded. AND because in the end they can choose easier work to take on.

Use a heavy guage tube and extend the breaker bar to about 3ft in total, they will come undone, i stood on mine with both feet. When you do them up do them as tight as you can but dont go over board with it, then take the van to a lorry place and ask them to do it up with a torque wrench. The lorry chaps have the big torque wrenches and can do it to the correct torque.

There is always play in rear wheel bearings, and there will be even more if you use GSF bearings as they are dog shit. Don't worry about a little, if you can grab the wheel and think... Oh my god then it's possibly the right time to change. Expect the brake back plates to fall in pieces, the handbrake cable to be siezed into the back plate and the muppet who did the brake pipes last didn't use any grease behind the pipe nut so that is now siezed to the pipe and will twist off. The bleed nipple will shear off. Don't start the job unless you have access to the aformentioned parts, or can live without your van for a few days. Watch out for the bearing carrier to be worn giving a poor fit for your inner bearing, very very common, worse on syncro's for some reason. We always use bearing fit fluid when fitting rear inner bearings. Bearings are obsolete from VW, GSF ones are shit, JK use Febi Bilstein I think, which are okay, SKF kits are out there, no one seems to stock them, expect to pay good money for those, but they are very, very good. I source my own in and have a few kits on the shelf, inners are decent quality, outers are made by the same people who made them for VW (Torrington) |
