The sensor on our T5 is held in
with anti-tamper screws.

Haynes simply says it's
a delicate bit of kit.

Aren't all sensors?

So, why have VW used
anti-tamper screws please?

I think most modern airflow sensors use a film instead of a wire and the film is delicate and can be wrecked by cleaning especially with some chemicals (although most people seem to ignore this.)  VW probably would rather owners left it alone hence the screws.

A hot wire sensor or a hot film sensor works by the cooling passage of the airflow changing the conductivity across the sensor.  The ECU compares this with a reference voltage to decide how much air is passing the sensor.
