Started the van fine...then slowly cut out had new battery fitted as it needed doing anyway went to start it an it's just cranking slowly an nothing happens doesn't fire 😔 would appreciate some advice on what the problem is 😁 previous owner never had any issues so it may just be my luck 😑 1984 1.9 T3 petrol manual Thanks folks 😊 |

You describe it as "slowly cut out". Petrol engine basically requires fuel and spark to run (that is as long as the important parts like pistons / conrods, crankshaft, timing belt / chain are intact)  .So was it left idling when it cut out? If so it could just be that the engine flooded itself (wet the sparkplugs if the choke system was stuck on). NB: Make sure no flammable substances are in the area when you do this. Check for spark by taking the centre HT lead off the distributor cap (leaving its other end on the coil) and laying the end of it 5-10mm from a metal part of the engine. Then get someone to crank the engine and check for a spark. Hopefully you'll see a decent bluish spark. If you get a spark, it'd be an idea to remove the dizzy cap and check the cap and rotor arm contacts and carbon brush in the centre are intact and not burnt out. If that is ok then move on to checking the spark plugs to see if they are a dark colour and wet from flooding. If the plugs are light brown and dry then you could be looking at a lack of fuel. |

Yeah was left idling as it cut out as I was about to take it out lol £ everything is definitely intact yes Can't see it being a major issue it has fuel too so il get on this little task today, pretty sure it could be the engine flooding itself! | Checked the plugs they're dry an light blue? checked the rotor arm an brush an they're fine just need to take ht lead off an check for a spark but to be fair it may need a little fuel in it! The dials just move where they want 😂 the van is fairly clean never had major work done,not had it that long fingers crossed it's not nothing major |
