Hi

I had my EGR blanked off a little while ago because my van was going into limp mode with the glow plug light and exhaust warning lights flashing.The warning lights have just come back on. Any ideas what could be the problem? Has anyone had this problem after blanking off the EGR?

Are your brake lights working properly ?  This is not a trick question, a faulty brake light switch can cause glow plug (and other) warning lights.  

Is your van in limp mode ?

Any other symptoms (and exactly which lights are currently on) ?

Which year was your van manufactured ?  IIRC later T5s need to have code in the ECU changed when blanking off the EGR.

You don't give any details of what engine your van has but if it it is late enough to have an exhaust warning light it almost certainly has an electronicaly operated EGR instead of the 'dumb' vacuum operated EGR of the early vans.  As far as I know if you blank off the EGR on your version of EGR you will need to get it deleted from the ECU otherwise it will see it as a fault.  (You can't do this with VCDS, you will need a remapper).  

You could really do with getting it on VCDS diagnostics to make sure of exactly what codes have been set.  Smile

My van is a 2012 T28 2Ltrs. I've have had the EGR deleted from the ECU and the blocking plate put in. My brake lights are working.

The exhaust light could be DPF related.  Have you had the DPF removed and deleted also?  Unless you have, it could be blocked because it can't regenerate properly with no EGR valve on the later vans. 

Note that the presence of a DPF or something that looks like one is part of the MOT these days.

You need to get someone to check if it is blocked and if so, how blocked it is.  Sometimes forced regeneration via VCDS is possible but only if it's not blocked past a certain point, otherwise VCDS won't do it (fire risk).  There are various cleaning fluids but I don't know if they work.  You could just bash the guts out of it with bar or similar but you would need to get it deleted in the ECU otherwise the lights will be on again.

You engine is designed to run weak and needs the gasses from the ear valve to function correctly
That's the simple version
So as others have said you can't do what you have done to an electronic egr valve unless the ecu is remapped

The ECU has been remapped....the egr delete was done at the same time...

I have not been driving the van over 60 mph lately....thinking back to when I had egr issues, I remember giving the van a motorway run and the warning lights went out. Can't quite remember why....

The DPF relies on occasional faster runs to keep it clean.  You could try some motorway runs if it isn't already too blocked.  The fact that you have the glow plug light on as well as the exhaust light isn't a good sign though.  You really do need to get the codes read in case it is something else (exhaust pressure sensor etc).

just been to my local VW specialist, the fault codes showed a DPF issue and a DPF regeneration duration issue.....it's seem like the regular regenerations haven't been happening for a few thousand miles. Has anyone come across this?

Anyone know a good DPF cleaning company? Scanned around online and there seems to be a few companies that do it..
