Hello,
Away using the van as she is meant to be.
2.5 D24 non turbo
Injector pump belt has shed lots of teeth.
Could someone please give me a basic guide to replacement and rough timing up?
Or direct me to a relevant thread?
I can't find one.
I have a Haynes but of course it is for petrol motors.
Thank you
I have to be back to the grind in Heaven Wednesday morning.

Locked out of my MediaFire account so I cannot share the Manuals' written with pictures at the moment. Will keep trying to find a way.

Done it, you just need to confirm it has worked.

If you mark it all up when taking it off you should be OKish, but bear in mind the cam pulley is not keyed to the cam so if you take that off as well, you will struggle to get the timing right without the proper tools.

I'd be concerned why the belt shed its teeth, if within the change interval.

For a rough on the road repair, you could probably get away with removing the cam pulley, getting the slot in the end of the cam horizontal, get the IP pulley so you can fit an improvised timing pin through the hole (I reckon something like an M16 bolt might do?) and the timing should be close enough to at least run.

The manuals and other advice will be enormous help.
To give you the background, I was cruising along there was a clatter she kept running but badly.
I pulled over and she stalled and would not restart.
I took off all covers and with help from a local garage spotted the stripped teeth.
Foolishly I haven't changed any belts in the last six years (will do them all when I get back).
He reckoned age and a slack belt may have caused them to strip.
The pump turns OK with the usual pump resistance.
This is the first day without rain.
My first challenge is to get at the crank bolt to turn to TDC.
There is a lot of corrosion on the rad cowling bolts.
I have ordered the belt for tomorrow hopefully I can get the M16 and a 27 mm socket.
The AA can take me home but pride tells me to get her running here (Beadnall)
Thanks

You may need a file, grinder or lathe too.

For some reason, 'NewPosts' does not always bring up all new posts, so I missed your post at 15.36pm. I know I was checking all day.

Good luck, typical that it happens on a work day.

Beadnell, with an E, just in case the AA cannot find you.Wink

Hello,
If anyone can help.
I cannot find the TDC O on the flywheel.
I have rotated it twice tooth by blessed tooth.
Other than taking an injector out is there any other way of finding TDC?
There is a V cutout on the Cam pulley that drives the injector but I have no idea what to align it with.
Sitting here on the campsite frustrated.
There are some Germans here perhaps they will know about VW's will go and ask.
Please get in touch if you can help

According to the manual there is an 'X' about 50mm from the TDC on the flywheel. It does not seem to say which way though.

Edit; A picture shows 'above'

I think, but not having done it or being able to remember where I saw it, that the cam lobes on cylinder 1 should both be pointing evenly up. Logically this would be correct, highest lift furthest away from the valves.

From D24 Manual.

Turn engine until cyl. 'l is at TDC - iniection
Always use the vibration damper center bolt to turn the
engine.
27 mm socket or wrench 5188.
Both cylinder 1 cams should point obliquely upwards.
Flywheel at 0 mark

That may help you find the '0'

Thank you for all this help.
I am moving the flywheel with a screwdriver a tooth at a time!
I tried taking the cam cover off but succeeded only in rounding off the nuts
I was unable to get the radiator shroud off with the tools available.
The battery is now going flat so it looks like the AA home.
Boo!

The mark on the flywheel is almost impossible to see. I remember having a ballache with mine but can't remember how I found it as it was a long time ago.

Are the D24's a "safe engine", cos when a belt snapped on my SD1 it turned the valves into lovely shapes.

Hello,
Thank you all very much, especially LT Campers.
Thompsons of Seahouses picked it up this afternoon to start the joyous relay back to Driffield.
They decided to take it back to their garage to have a look first
After a fair bit of fiddling they found I had the timing 180* out!
They retried it she started but would not run, come on girl!
Moved it a tooth and she struck up first kick (oops slipping into motorbike prose)
Woo hoo!
Repacked her slipped em a tenner (they were charging it to the AA anyway)
In case anyone has the same woes as me this is what they did.
Jacked up one back wheel put it in 5th and found TDC much quicker than I did by turning the wheel.
They lined up the cutout on the cam pulley with a marker on the cam housing at about 7 o clock and it was within a tooth straight away. There were two pros doing it mind but a top set of lads who could just as easily have packed us off on a low loader.
Just tucking into a second Bloody Mary.
Thanks again everyone

There often enquiries for good garages around and about, who will not shy away from LTs, I think these fellows fit the bill nicely.

AndyT, ?Worth having a sticky in Chat, in which to list the helpful ones?

Possibly, only difficulty is getting full & accurate information.
Plus you'd have to scroll through all the entries to see if there was one nearby.
Give it a go, if there's a good response I'll make it a sticky.
