Silly question, but have you tightened the nut?

There are many alternatives, some better than others, from genuine electric big mirrors, to corrado, syncro ones etc, I think rowlesy fitted Landy ones on his DOKA

Yeah, keep tightening the nuts up till they snap, on my second pair now. tried to find NOS ones as some guys on the samba have advertised but on the pictures they are the same as the GSF ones. MuppetsUnhappy

Why don't you buy new ones from a VW dealer.

Thanks for the offers of used ones, but as my bus is quite clean (in my opinion) :-), I will look for clean/new ones.

I didn't realise VW still sold them new, will try calling VW commercial and see. Also will look at the Defender ones for looks. What year Defender mirrors are you using??
Thanks

Don't blame you - that's exactly why I upgraded to big mirrors. Expensive though. Defender ones look pretty good, and think they are fairly cheap for new ones

Take a look at Jag XJ6 series 3 / XJ-S mirrors. Nice and square, chunky, electric. Shouldn't be too hard to mod a T3 mirror foot onto them as they have a similar mounting angle on the door. Would look nice and actually be of some use! Miles better than blobby 'rados.

PS Anyone wanna buy a pair of Corrado mirrors?

I broke my passenger mirror last week and bought a gsf replacement - what a pointless price of shit it is! Can't see a f#&king thing - annoying cost I'm off to France next week so will need it.

I like your landy ones Rowlsey - are the brackets of a landy 90 too?

Got some LT brackets with brand new T3 mirror housing here, if your interested. They should fit straight on, my matey has same on his T3. No problem fitting them. £100

Posted By: cruz
Date Posted: 10 Aug 12 at 23:05
I've got LT mirrors too but the larger 4x4 version where the mirror can be swiveled through 360 degrees to level the mirror up as LT mirror arms to not sit perpendicular to a T3 body.

Before that I had repros, from Brickwerks, and one from GSF and they were fine. Both were Hagus

There are two types of repro mirror. Cheap and better quality. GSF sell both i.e one is £6 the other roughly £23

Posted By: JAYFOR
Date Posted: 10 Aug 12 at 23:58
Yup I did go for the £23 ones and one has now snapped and the others on max adjustment. I do like the landy ones tho but will also look at the jags :-) coolio, seems I'm not the only one then

Do the defender ones give a good wide viewing angle? - if so I think I will go that way ultimately, my local spares place has them complete for £12 each plus vat

Syncro mirrors are the best thing going....you can see the back wheel going round as well as everything else behind you...also available heated! LT ones are usable but the lower bracket is spaced differently so some fiddling about is needed and the tube needs modifying as well, a set of genuine new syncro T3 mirrors can be found for £200 unheated.

I have a load of standard mirrors going cheap as well, but get syncro ones....you will never look back.....well you will but you will be able to see back whereas before you couldn't look back even if you wanted to.....see what I did there?

They do look the part, also fitted to awful Sherpa vans IIRC!  A bit like scaled-down factory wide-body Pritschenwagwen mirrors. Now if you could get the LT / 16" mirror base on it's own...

Get a cheap mirror.
Cover the round bit of the mount in impact adhesive.
Sprinkle on sand.
Allow to dry.
Put together loosely and adjust on the van.
Tape it so it doesn't move.
Take off van and tighten.
Hey presto cheap mirror that shouldn't move.
But think the landy ones look good...

Every job means my van is a bit more sorted....

I am going for the landy ones cos they look good, they also show more of the line of admirers queuing up behind my bus when I pootle through the countryside LOL

Also, the GSF ones perish! The magic bit is already giving up and turning brown!

I have a problem similar to this in that each time I hit the dual carrigeway in my van my wings mirrors like to streamline themselves and close in, so all i can see is the floor or the drivers door.

Looking at an alternative.
Like the Idea of after market ones how easy are the brackets to make up and does any one have a template.

To start You have a Vw that gos fast enough to fold the mirrors in WOW   I drive a defender with standard mirrors a lot!!   a hell of a lot ( for a living to pay for my T3 !! ) and frankly the mirrors are great overall and IF YOU BREAK ONE !! easy and cheap to repear I drive for pleasure a T3 with the big mirrors ( caravelle ) and yes they are good but the defender ones are a lot cheaper !! if you break one .I had a T3 with standard mirrors before and they were frankly crap !! Couldn't see a great deal behind with them
Hope this helps

You need to make up brackets like these with a bit of rubber behind (old cycle inner tube is fine).

I picked up convex mirrors off eBay, cost about £35 all up.

Adapters from brother Dave, mirrors are larger defender ones (same as I had on my 130) think they are 6.25" x 10.25".

Whole lot came to a few quid over £50 for the mirrors and adapters. Bought a heated mirror kit for £28 at the same time and will be wiring these into an oe rear window demister/fogger switch.

Holes are already in door from factory anyway (holes between the mirror mounting screw)

trouble with land rover is they used whatever they had to get stuff built back in the day and they havent shrugged it off yet! then part suppliers have there own take on l-r parts. i thought they were m6 when i got my first set and just assumed the treads were shit - took a genuine set off a 110 and took them to a fastener wholesalers and found imperial threads fitted fine! they fit originally on door hinges held on by m8 bolts? LOL
