well I have managed to find my self a mk1 caddy on ebay looks okay from a few feet away but when you get up close the new "spray job" that has been done looks like the guy has done it with a vacume cleaner, so that is one of the jobs to do on it, body wise the caddy aint too bad, needs a gerneral tidy up really and a bit of welding on the bed but other wise pretty sound (will get some pictures up when I get my finger out Smile)

I have fliped the car on its side today to have a look under it and to see the damage... to find the worlds most shit lowering job ever, thats the first job to sort, running cut springs on the front and an axle flip on the back being held together with wood with the saddles still on top of the axle and a brake limeter made of adehsive tape. so I have decided to run coilovers on the front but the back i am abit unsure on. if I am running just a normal axle flip eg no spacers/lowering blocks or what ever they are called, do I need to run shorter shocks too or will the standard ones do ?

will get some pictures up soon Smile cheers

thanks for those links much apreciated right I have found the info on the shocks ish ... it says pre 68 bettle shocks, but is that front or rear? and would you happen to know any part numbers ?

right some photos

okay so this is how it looked when I got it back home, like I said not a bad paint job from a few feet away but close up ....

considering it was only sprayed last year Confused
the first hurdle came acctually trying to get it off the trailor took about an hour in the pouring rain because it was low and they had bodged some side exit exhaust on ...

right so the first thing I did was get one side jack to have a look underneath, whist it was up there I changed the front brake pads they were knackerd.

I decided to start taking the wood out to see what lurks under there ... so far so good.

was better than I thought it would be, need to sort them shit repairs out though.

couldnt really see under it very well so decided to flip it and well I was plestently surprised ....

(after i removed the fuel tank and spare tyre ) looks pretty tidy

bit of sand blasting to do an a couple of repairs but over all pretty solid.

oh and if any of you have any split pipes apparently selotape is a good fixWacko

right onto the suspension what a mess ! cut springs on the front

flipped back axle with no saddles and spaced with wood !!

will get some more photos as work progresses at the minute I am looking for a fuel tank mine is absolutly shot and a cut off the load bed between the two cross members maybe 12"x18" so I can make some repair patches of of them  so if you have anything PM or reply to this I will post a wanted add too Smile

ah spot on will get them ordered then. I have just ordered some propper saddles for the axle flip and am sorting some coilovers out for the front. I am planning on keeping it for a while, well untill the van is done atleast. I am going to sort it though, the bottom is being sand blasted then treated, then dealing with all the shit bodges then am gonna sort that spray job out on topThumbs Up

well bit of an update, not had much chance to do anything been absolutly flat out, nurserys busy season that and the weather, working out side in the rain aint fun. well any way a few photos.....

stripped off the repair patches

these were just stuck over the bad bits with filler :/ ...

cut all the bad out

welded the fist peice into the chassis rail treated it with some vatcan and some galvanising spray paint...

got the bed repair in, just got to grind the welds off...

vatcaned the back side, will do the front when I get it tidyed up abit.

I have done the hole below it the same but forgot to take photos

I have also fliped the rear axle using some propper saddles, I did this while the axle was on but again forgot to take photos, but i have now decided to take it off and blast it and paint it, do the job properly.

bought some beetle shocks for the flip the other day but when I got them home

... took them back and they swaped them for me so they will go back on after it has been painted. also bought some more goodies all waiting till the time is right..

I was afer a caddy on ebay, all the bits that I needed to finish my project and even an AAZ engine... look on ebay tonight to check and it has been ended early. so that idea is down the pan any way shall keep looking. hopefully it should progress abit faster now things are slacking off :)

Yeah dude I am painting all the repairs as I go along just forgot to take the photos of that bit .... But yeah getting the welding sorted there are a couple of bits on the load bed to do a small price on the sill and where the bed joins to the arches on both sides need sorting.... Then blasting it and stone chopping / waxoiling the underneath , replacing the brake pipes, painting the axle up, re fitting sorting the tank then back on its feet for prep for the respray :)

done a bit more today, got a few more holes welded up, should think i am about 1/2 way there welding wise.... i will get pictures up when i get abit more done.

at the minute i have got to start thinking colours. i have decided black but i am now undecided weather to go just plain black or black with some kind of metal flake in it maybe somthing like this -----> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/350386463486?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
or
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/350564326541?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

if not what colours do you recon would look good flaked into black ? or just straight black ? (gloss btw)

opinons please :D

Posted By: jason k

to be black the body has to be super straight or it will look shit.

is it straight enough?

yeah I know its a bit of a shit colour to spray, the bed aint the straightest but all that is happening with that is it is getting stone chipped then covered again so I am not too bothered about that. the rest of the body work there is a few dents and dinks but the bloke who is spraying it, who is a sprayer and pannel beater, body work person by trade said they should pull out and when we are done it will be okay to go black, but he only had a quick look, Iwill get him down again before I put the order in on the colour so he can 100% make sure.

what other colour would you sujest though ? :)

Posted By: nicko868
Date Posted: 26 Jun 12 at 13:14
well a bit of an up date been a bit steady latly.

cut out the bit that was rotten in the bed and arch on the drivers side

made up a repair pannel for it

got it tacked in just need to finish it off.

after i had filiped the axle properly with the propper saddles i deacided i might as well take it all to bits so it can be painted properly and look abit better

axle off

then you know how it is one thing leads to another and well......

quite tidy up there..

all the suspension running gear is off and blasted, being painted black today.... shouldnt have blasted it on the barrow though Approve

bought a new few tank the other day, got that blasted which showed up some weeping so that is being sorted out today, got a bloke welding in some patches today, it is a diesel tank but i still think he is a brave guy Confused.

while that was being blasted the guy blasted my bed to see what is lurking.

i hate this load bed Broken Heart oh well lets look for another repair pannel now.....

oh well on a good note got my paint the other day and some wheels for it and my seats!!  ...just need to get this bed done and i can move onto the fun stuff.

yeah it really is shit, i think it would be easier if i just did the same and replaced the whole bed but i have got about half of it done so i may as well just plod on........but i guess its better than getting it done and then it rotting out 6 months down the line i guess....... and haha your funny !! summer!!

i was thinking more down the lines of alu chequer plate over the whole floor and up the bulkhead as i can get metric sizes to cover most of the width in one sheet! (and a nice press-brake at work to fold the front up)

yeah i was thinking about somthing like that, but like one of the first things that is asked when they are sold is whats the bed like? and if it aint that carougated shit then it puts alot of people off.... i am just getting mine welded up, stone chip it then doing that wood proppa and sealing it in so the water cannot get underneath because the bed aint really that straight, its abit wavey  in places not really good enough for black.

Posted By: nicko868
Date Posted: 11 Jul 12 at 20:09
well been a bit slack latley really just been sourcing bits, had to find a new fuel tank as we couldnt save it Cry ..... found some more bed repair that should get her early next week... vatcaned the bed just to keep the rust off.

got my running gear all sprayed

got my front struts all built up, running gti discs and pads just spraying the calipers at the moment

i have got alot of play in the top mount of the strut even though the nylock is tight, should this go between the top mount and the top of coil over ?

if not it may be a case of new top mounts ..... another thing to add to the list.

i was chatting to my brother about the rifle shells he keeps on his window sill

saying how i had seen them made into dust caps, well when i got home from work at the weekend he gave me these which he had made

Posted By: rowlesy
Date Posted: 11 Jul 12 at 20:56
thats the spring retainer for the top. not used on the coilovers chap! bearings may have gone in your top mounts if they wiggle around a lot. if they move just a little thats norm. can you take a pick of your beam for me? just the relocated leaf plates! how thick off the beam are you now?

yeah i wasnt sure if it was used or not, cheers. i have just had the top mounts off and had a look at the bearings and they are moving up and down and all directions so i have poped them out will nip to gsf tommorow and see if they have anything.

i will go and take a picture now :)

rowlesy :
i bought these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150823935228
so i could keep the original saddles on incase any future owners wanted to flip back.... plus i cba with cutting them and re aligning them.

they also center the axle back by using the offset hole, this means though that you have to get the oxy plant out and elongate the hole in the plate

as for height i havnt bothered with blocks but you can add up to about 2 1/2 inch blocks in to get it lower but i think this will be easily low enough for me should see about a 4 inch drop

well its been quite a while since my last update and things aint really changed that much, just got back from working security down the oylmpics so i have a couple of quid in me pocket for the caddy Big smile

my last statement of " that should be about it for rust" was pretty wrong

bed repair section arived

damn straight Smile thought the best and easiest thing to do would be cut the whole peice out rather than doing little patches ..

got it cleaned up and the new peice in pretty problem free ..

just needs the welds grinding off and tidying up Big smile

brake lines made up for the rear axle so that is sorted, going to go back as far as the compensator valve but the rest are good past there....

also got a few more bits of rot cut out ..

drivers side cill

front arch and rear arch need a peice letting in ..

both sides of the chassis above the bumpstops were rotten so have been cut out, got one peice made up and welded in but forgot to get the pictures taken Approve

but for the welding on the underside i think there is about 5/6 more bits to do then it can go back on its feet Thumbs Up .... more problems than i was sold it as though Angry

also got the heart for it sorted out 1.6 gtd and a 4T gear box to go in ...needs assesmbing though, will get some photos up!

well just had a go at diy clearing my rear lights

turned out okay but the clear was abit of a dull greeny colour so i tried tinting them .... oops

turned out too dark so i took them off using thinners

re did it, it looked okay whilst wet but then went like orange peel.... so i am not too keep on them :/ .. might just thinner them off and just polish them clear .. not sure yet.

also toying with the idea of fitting one of my gte dashes into it -

this is one i did for my T3

Cheers dude yeah it dose look pretty good I am gonna get a peice of bar, hot it up and try and do some thing similar :)

Any way had quite a busy weekend got me dad's mates big diesel compressor in so I could get on with rubbing down and what not :)

Sills all stonechipped

Got the body the doors the tail gate the wings light pods and bonnet all flatted back now I have to start Gping over it sorting out the little dings! Me brother is gonna give me a hand with that as he is quite good at that sort of thing :)

Also got all the wiring and cables back in the engine bay along with the steering rack wish bones and brake set up on but I forgot to take a photo :)

I am having troubles with the m/c upgrade though I am not sure where I am going wrong I need to put pressure on the m/c to be able to bolt it in but that will mean the brakes are always on I have taken the servo back out and it is still the same can any one help?

Also managed to pick up a stainless bumper we are Going to adapt to fit..... Sneak peak....

Bracket cut down to size just need to drill it to fit, will reveal more where it gets done.......

And finally.... recived my new door cards the other day look awesome cheers gggti :D look ace with me speakers!

And that concludes another episode of caddy crisis, tune in next time folks! :)

theres a spacer missing off the m/c....... whatever sits past the bolted shoulder on the top one needs to be the same on the bottom one.
its like youre braking already as your compressing the m/c to make it fit!

Yeah I know that's what is happening with the compressing but it never came with a spacer in it nor have I seen anyone else's with a spacer in. Plus if I put a spacer in I wouldn't be able to get the nuts on it. I just cannot work it out :S

scratch that too much time with polos! although if you can space it that would solve your problems! i remember a thread about retro fitting a 16v mc (22mm) to a mk1 golf system where the owner modded the ball pin on the servo linkage to make later set up work as it should. think he had a later mk2 servo too............. caddy forum or mk1oc

Well started a new job a couple of weeks ago so progress has been very slow to say the least,. Couple of pics though....

Front suspension back together drive shafts in and stuff.

Brake servo problem sorted out, just plumbing in now with t peices for the pressure switches

Wings and doors premiered although I have now found a mint passenger door so I need to get that primed and ready for paint

Got the rear corner cut out too as it was fucked. Had a dent in the corner and a dodgey repair right in the swage line

And the pannel that will be going back in, much better :)

Got this weekend off so will hopefully get on with a bit on the caddy then and going to the Lincoln camper day too :)

Well not got a massive amount of progress done at all with starting my new job I have not had chance to do alot, but have done abit

Got me gear stick modded just need a thread tapping on top and then iI can start work on the top :)

Been busy flattening back the body still filling and flatting, I hate that job though so I keep avoiding it :/ ....

Also got that rear quater stitched in will get a photo of that soon...

Got a few more goodies!! Love payday! And the missus bought me some pressed plates :D

And been slowly piecing the jigsaw of an engine back together, starting to look like something, although all four injectors were knackered so they are in for rebuild :(

Again that's all for the time being!! Need to pull my finger out abit!

Posted By: nicko868
Date Posted: 21 Apr 13 at 19:32

Right moved the engine over to the Caddy, bloody heavy pig that was!

After about an hour or so and abit of blue air the engine was in and with only one casualty

I have since masked it off rubed it down and blown it in...

Finally down onto 4 wheels!!!

Guess there was no more tip toeing round it I had to get on with the body work :(

The corner that was stitched it

Filling and priming and priming and filling and knocking the dents out and filling and rubbing and priming sake! How can anyone enjoy this bit?  Not even half way yet!  :(

Numberplate mounted and lights sorted :)

And just a couple of extra shots,  starting to make a bit of progress now!  not gonna get much done in the next week or so as I am flat out with work but hopefully it will keep rolling now!

cheers dude :), well the vans a bit of a sore subject, this was supposed to be a quick thing to put on the road and use as a daily whilst the van was being done, but as you can see as perusal it turned out more, i am wanting to get back on the van but i dont know if it is worth it i mean it is pretty damn rotten like proppa knackered :/ so i have got to think do i want to spend the time doing it , or scrap it and find a half decent one ? ...... but i have noticed in the last 12 months the price of them has reslly gone up, makes me think i should do mine, ah i dont know, we will see when i have got this done !

I'd say find a rotten high spec one. At least then you'll have all the Gucci bits, otherwise you'll spend a fortune on eBay! Plus it will be worth more when its done.

I'm talking all the nice bits like electric windows, mirrors, power steering, planks, big bumpers, as grills, square lights. Trust me, the pursuit for Gucci van bits will never stop!

Cheers mate! ..... Tee4 - unfortunately you cannot swap the mechanism over as the metal ones are fixed in without a screwits just not possible :( but have sorted a new set now :)

Interior up date!!

Got some sound deadening in and sorted!

Got 40 sq ft in there so hopefully it will be a bite quieter!

Got me carpets in they go up to the top of the b pillar, there are a few imperfections here and there but for a first attempt not bad!

The headliner is in too although it ain't very clear in those photos, made in black vinyl by gggti looks absolutely brilliant! Got one crease in it when fitting the Windows but I am gonna try and get this out some point this week.

Glass in, starting to look like a car again now!

Cooling sorted, mk2 golf GTD rad made to fit with and 8 and a 10 inch slim line fan front mounted due to my intercooler location (next update)

And last but not least.......

Much better :) tis coming together now finally!

seat base is put because I still need to extend my seat belt retainers

tried to recover my dash, I gave up and drove to your for a new one!!

front indicators in, resistors in and now flashing correctly cheers MLBV!

're stone chipped the bed

exhaust system officially done! 2.5 stainless front to back with a 18 inch silencer half way down

and finally engine all piped and wired. inter cooler in place.... would have had it started but the fuel filter housing was drawing in air so that is the next job :(

brakes have been bled in the tyres are on the wheels.... it has been a big push trying to get it done for RR but I have just fell short :(

left to do is-
wheels on
tracking
camber
lift the front slightly
extend the seatbelt retainers
other side checker on
bleed and run engine
sort gear positioning
little bits of trim

mot...... soon hopefully although it will be slow progress for the next couple of weeks but then I shwould be back on it!
