Ok, I've searched hi and low, trawled, scraped, looked under stones, but it seems, to my amazement, there is no collection of these anywhere in the yard?
So let's be having you...post your pics here, plus any information you think might be interesting about your particular varient.
Yes there'll be haters, particularly those that think fitting a tent to your roof and covering it with a permeable plastic cover is "de riguer", but some of us, the intelligent ones, can see the inner beauty of these Merricks, Ice cream vans, boats on a bus, whatever you want to call them.
It's over to you

OK, shall I kick this one off? Here's mine:
'90 Atlantic with the 2.1 WBX lump in SS form. Two German owners prior to me, a tick over 200,000km on the clock now and hasn't missed a beat since I bought it in September '09 and put 4,000km on it (excepting the time I called the AA out in a panic 'cos of the bag o' spanners sound caused by a lazy hydraulic lifter ).
Nice, well looked after van when I got it, but I still seem to have spent a fortune. Aside from the usual mechanical stuff (fluids, filters) here's what I've done: - new wheel trims (and a set of Ronal R8s waiting to be refurbed when I have the cash) - gutter sealant dug out, gutters bare-metalled, new sealant and hightop completely resprayed - a couple of rust issues in and around the tailgate sorted - back to bare metal, rotten bits cut out and replaced then sprayed to blend in with original paint - new fuel tank and fuel lines. Petrol no longer pisses out all over the forecourt when I fill up - cylinder head pressure test. All clear - new head unit and speakers plus active sub installed on the end of the kitchen unit. It's not exactly thumping, but at least there's some bass now... - fire extinguisher installed - new submersible water pump installed
Plus ongoing small jobs like greasing the steering wheel horn contact ring to stop that annoying scraping sound, sorting the seat bases so they actually swivel without inducing a hernia, that kind of thing. Still to do: alloys, a subtle lowering job, stainless exhaust, replace the missing thermostat control knob panel thingumy for my Eber. And then next year, a couple of seams that'll be needing attention...
It's an ongoing project. But I'm loving it. Bathtub on the roof and all

That does look very tidy, Jason
Do the -50mm AVO springs give an accurate 50mm drop, even with the extra weight of the hightop?

Here is my 89 Westy California 2.1DJ. I have owned the van for nearly 2 years and I absolutely love it. I bought it mainly to camp in at the shows but we enjoy it so much we use it loads and holiday in it. With having 2 young kids the high top is superb and I wouldn't swap it. One of the best trips I've been on was to EBI in Belgium last year (maybe that was because I with my mates).

& the yellow westy hightop above has the right stance & wheel choice, whitebands & the hightop work really well & makes it look less................tall!

Well he purchased it directly from the Austrian Army, and they procured it new from VW, so I would have to assume it was VW factory fitted.
However, it may have been made only to order, for the military.
I'll ask the owner for more info, and get back to you on that one...

Looks quite OE, there's a gutter rail above the windscreen which I've only seen on factory high tops. Prepared to be corrected on that though.
|
Posted By: DavidPallister
Date Posted: 30 Mar 10 at 19:08
Aye, tiz a factory VW hightop, I've got one, they were available as an option to make a high roof delivery van or a high roof kombi. Seem to be favoured by the military as the fibre glass roof was fitted instead of the steel roof, so they are open to the top all the way along. The structure underneath the roof is the same as the Westy roofs. Holdsworth used them as a base vehicle for their conversions as well.
I've just pulled the roof off mine as the sealant had come away in the gutters so was letting water in, and the inner structure has gone fairly crusty in places, so maybe not one of VW's finest designs (think they're a bit ugly from the outside too IMHO)

Thanks for the comments I wanted something that was old but looked newer than it was. To answer the questions, the grills are SA type that are readily available, fitted with golf crystal headlights and clear indicators. The bodykit and bumpers are bonded GRP, quite a bit of work but the whole thing was in bits and primer to have some new panels in anyway, when I found the kit for sale. The interior is a 2.5 berth, I wanted a space for the boy to sleep and play where he can't cause too much trouble, so he has the rear roof space. Mrs CM has the front roof space for all her non essentials. The interior units came from RVTEC at Preston. The roof has EMC in the rear, I think the design has been used by a few manufacturers, they look very different and blend into the van much better when painted the same as the body colour IMO. Feel free to remove pics and waffle if they shouldn't be here. Ta.

Hello. Had this over 3 years years now pretty much as it was when we bought it on the outside but have had the interior re-done.108k miles 1900 dg engine Ford Granada Cosworth Alloys not great but ok. Body kit is not complete on the vehicle but do have all of it including offside main plank. Lowered about 40mm. complete new exhaust system 1 year ago for Mot. New starter motor. New fuel pump ( how expensive are these things) very. new Ignition coil, leads rotor arm etc. 4 berth ,2 on bottom and 2 up top (ideal for children)as not loads of head room up there. 4 burner hob, grill, sink with electric tap,3 way fridge. Love the hi top as im 6'2" and can stand up no crouching for me.

After driving left hookers for 5 years I've kind of taught myself to pull up at roundabouts so i can still see, failing that I stand up on the brake pedal and look out the kitchen window
I thought I'd miss my old Reimo so much, But the whole family's loving the Cheetah to bits, Only had one night away as been away on holiday, Was so nice to just pull up, Handbrake on and open a beer,No more spending an hour putting awning up and setting everything out

Okay,
here is my van.
Simple, essentially straight and not too much rust. But suffering with the usual problems of an early water boxer - i.e. suspect petrol tank and rust steel radiator pipes. Doh! Interior ripped out and a definate candidate for a roller paint job. A vehicle I can put my mark on. If the wife lets me.
Cheers

Some nice looking vans here's my one which used to be owned by Andy7 on here with a replacement engine fitted by simon and gang, still going strong but needs the valve stems doing sooner than later.
Electric Picnic
Cahirdaniel - Kerry rep Ireland
not the best pics so I'll have to get the van spruced up in the spring for a proper photoshoot

As this is my first post i would like to say a" big Hello to every one", have been lurking for a while just not got round to posting. I have been into rebuilding and messing with bugs ,type3's , campers and porsches for approx 20years but this is my first venture into watercooled so here goes.
I have owned this rather ugly high top camper conversion for about 8 months but have not had time to start work on it due to house move and renovation and the birth of our baby boy 6 months ago .
The bus had been sat for some years so the plan is to replace the rear arch panels and both cills, chassis wise it seems solid, rip out and rebuild interior, check engine over, replace brakes and suspension, mild lowering and a set of rims oh and repaint, not much then!
i am currently starting on the cooling system to see whether or not i need to replace head gaskets. I managed to get the engine going after replacing fuel lines and wiring the new starter motor up that came with the van it started first time and sounded nice and quiet, However after running for a while it decided to start bubbling in the header tank and then spew its contents of the cooling system all over the road and the interior.

I thought it was just a generic plastic roof top, i thought factory high tops had the extended height side door aswell,

My newly purchased van and first ever project looking forward to doing it up and using it with wife and kids. Does anyone know anything about the Luna conversions - Google is not helping me.

Nice. And welcome to the brick-yard. I like the colour , but I have to admit that your "Luna" conversion is a new one to me. Must be very rare...which country was it first registered in?
