Hi all. I am a T5 man myself having a Shuttle for my chauffeur work. However a good friend of mine has an LT 2.5TD minibus 1999 model but with a replacement 2004 engine. He bought this vehicle some time ago with replacement engine having done about 50k. With a busy spell coming up he thought it prudent to have cambelt/pump belt changed as they were about due on time/mileage. Garage doing job had a problem removing bottom pulley and when it came off camshaft sprocket came with it!! Not useful!! They have reset the timing correctly so they say but of course you can't lock the crank. They reset pump timing to the marks given apparently and now vehicle runs terribly and is a pig to start!! Once warm will run reasonably but cuts out regularly and puffs smoke so obviously pump timing is out. Friend is now getting increasingly worried as he needs vehicle later this week. Have been told you need a dial gauge to set these up properly!! The garage are having it back tomorrow but to be fair are not specialists on this engine and are struggling. I spoke to a diesel specialist I have known for years (now semi-retired unfortunately) and he has offered to lend his dial gauge to set the pump but not sure the garage are going to know what to do with it anywayLOL Are there any tips or pointers to setting these up properly? Any advice would be very much appreciated as my friend is panicking now!! Many thanks.

A basic answer is they need to start from scratch. This will be a TDI engine and with 5 cylinders.
They will also need the correct timing tools to set it up propyl and if they are not familiar with this engine i very much doubt they will have the tools.
Any vehicle technical dater book will give a step by step process to do this job. Unfortunately to long to type out.

Thanks for that. The garage are sure they have the main cambelt timing right and are sure it is just a matter of getting the pump timing right now (belt on rear of engine)!! They are very good usually on most vehicles and have a good reputation locally but seem to be struggling with this oneConfused To be fair though they did say they hadn't got much experience on this engine!! Happy days!!

Sounds like its just old enough to need dynamic timing. Vag com needed. Timing is adjusted whilst engine running. You can do it with the dail gauge but not as good and takes ages. WIth vagcom ten minutes if you what to do!
Hope it was a cheap job as monkeys and peanuts spring to mind!

There is some notes on the website somewhere about doing a T4 2.5 TDI, the process I should imagine is very similar, although I've never done it on an LT.

Thanks for all repliesSmile Baxter you are a star!! That is brilliant!! Just printed it all off to take to garage numptys in the morning!! Got to go to Heathrow at 5am so will collect dial gauge from mate in Leamington Spa on way back and meet my friend at garage!! Will also see whether can borrow Vag com from my other mate. Just phoned friend John who owns LT and he is well chuffed that we appear to be making progressSmile Thanks again, will let you know the outcomeSmile

Timing adapter for the DTI need to be M10x1 type, not the more common M8 version.
It should be somehwere near with the DTI, but we often find that if you use the factory setting they are not quite right due to wear in the injection pump. best to get it somewhere near with DTI, run it up to temp then set with VagCom or similar.

Well we have a resultSmile Set with dial gauge this morning, myself and my friend ended up helping outLOL Right first time and runs perfectly, exactly as did beforeSmile Probably more luck than judgement but who cares alls well that ends wellClap Didn't use vag com as didn't have correct lead, only newer 16 pin type but looks like got away with it!! Many thanks for  the advice guysSmile Garage kept all my printouts from link by Baxter as the instructions were right on the moneySmile Top stuff!!
