Me again, I plugged the fridge into 240V today to check its operation, and luckily about an hour later it was nice and cold so I'm happy with that, however there was a rather pungent eggy pong throughout the van.

Has anyone had this before, the fridge has not been used for a while, the gas was not on, the leisure battery was not connected and there were no eggs in the fridge (and no I hadn't dropped and eggy fart).

I'm just off out to remove the fridge to service the gas side of it, is there anything I need to look out for that could be causing the nasty niff.

Cheers

Nugg

Check out any caravan/motorhome shop, you can buy stuff that gets rid of the rancid fridge smell, it`s due to being closed up for long periods of time. Also worth giving it a good scrub out with a mild bi-carbonate-of-soda and warm water solution, does a similar job and sterilises it Thumbs Up

yep, what JC says. Theres a scientific explanation for it... dunno what it is like, but "closed up fridgy pongey syndrome" kind of covers it.

Ideally when not on they should be left ajar, but other than removing the door that aint really possible with a westy fridge

I usually wedge the door on mine open with a cork and then hold the door shut against it with a piece of tape.

Why not find a second use for the Miltons fluid? That is after all what it's really meant for. By the way, just did my roof lining. Eyes are still smarting!!

True. I think the Miltons should be odour free if used weak enough, cos you don't need to rinse baby stuff after using it, but then I suppose you might not get rid of the smell if too weak. My hands smell bloody wierd I must say.  I guess it might be good for ridding your fridge of stains and lifting discolouration or does bicarb do that too?

The Westy fridge door lifts off the hinges (leastways mine does - 1981).  The fridge door is attached to the trim panel and lifts off the hinges at the front.  I'll try and do pics later.

Cheers peeps, is that all it is then???

I had cleaned it when I bought the van with Cillit Bang and its not ponged for the last few months with the door ajar (at times) until I fired it up for the first time this morning, that's why I thought it could be something more sinister, but hey ho Bi-Carb here it goes.
