Well I've bitten the bullet and removed the dash - a quick check of the voltage regulator reveals it's kaputt - have got a new one from GSF but it looks like it should be put in the other way (ie. so the text faces down). Has anybody replaced theirs, and does this sound right?

I had my dash out last year to fix a few duff lights. The regulator needs to be metal side down as the back is a heatsink to disipate heat.

Not sure how it will help, but here is a picture of my regulator on the back of the dash http://www.rabbitsonthemoon.com/DSCN1076.JPG - www.rabbitsonthemoon.com/DSCN1076.JPG

interesting PCB RR - mine doesn't have that funky curly bit onto the back of the temp/fuel gauges. Also doesn't have that multi-connector at the top of the photo? The replacement regulator I've got has a barrel connected on the heatsink so that if you flip it upside down the heat transfers.

Also the instructions say to put it face down  (sorry for the crap photo)

In 35 years of working in electronics I've only ever seen this type of design mounted metal side down. Very odd if it's supposed to go the other way, but would not put it past vehicle electronics as they often do things very strangely. I've tried to look up the pin out connections for the TCA700 but so far had no luck. Centre pin is almost certainly ground, but which one of the outer pins is in or out we don't know. I can only presume the replacement regulator is a different type as I think the TCA700 is now obsolete. Probably says 7805 on it as they are very common regulators. The stand off barrel may be a work around to allow a regulator with the pins the opposite way to a TCA700 to fit. It won't conduct as much heat as a regulator firmly mounted on its metal side, but it's not running anywhere near it's maximum 1 amp rating for the dash components so should still run cool.

If you don't have the flexible printed circuit then that is a bonus. Mine suffered cracks and needed a lot of work to get running again. Various dash lights packed up.

Close - it's a 7810 - below is the pin out for the TCA700Y and the KA7810A - as you described, the pinout is reversed, which is why it has been supplied like this. I guess I could mount the L-Shaped Heatsink on top of it with the screw through the Heatsink, then the Regulator and then into the white platic of the guage housing - then I would maximise the heat transfer. Do you reckon it's worth using some of that heat transfer paste they use in computers on it? LOL

As for the PCB - mine is a flexible one too - it's just not the same as the one in your photo - I will take a pic shortly and post it up on here.

I'd fit it as the blurb suggested. If its a 7810 its not having to work very hard to drop vehicle voltage to 10 volts. I always thought it regulated to 5 volts hence my assumption it was a 7805. A bit of heatsink cream won't do any harm if you have some to hand but it will not be getting hot or even warm with the low current its feeding and the smallish voltage drop. Glad you found a pin out diagram for the TCA700. I'll keep a copy of that as couldn't find it anywhere on the net or in my bookshelf of data books.

BTW, worth testing some of the dash bulbs while its all out. My heater illumination bulb had blown and there is also illumination inside the headlight switch that comes on as soon as you turn the ignition key. The headlight icon on the front of the switch lights up. I didn't even know it had illumination for that. Makes it much easier not to have to thumble around for the light switch. The fog light has the same illumination too. I got the bulbs online. Think they came from here http://www.brickwerks.co.uk - www.brickwerks.co.uk

I replaced mine last year.
Got the replacement in GSF too, Can't remember which way I fitted it but think I went with the instruction card, think I had to get a different screw for it though.

Can open up the dash at the weekend and take a pic for you if you want to see which way mine is fitted.

Guages worked fine since. Big smile
