I've always used 15W40 in my LT but I've seen on this forum that a few people use 10W40.

A friend just closed down a garage and had a few hundred litres of 10W40 left over which he offered me as a gift.

My LT leaks oil and I cover a lot of distance so change filters and oil quite often, so it could save me quite a lot of money to use the 10W40.

What are your opinions? Do any of you use 10W40 and what were your experiences?

It's a box truck, LT35 2.4TD from 1995.

I used castrol (gtx?) 15W40 last year and my LT didn't like it so changed it out after a couple of thousand km's or less. I normally use 10W40 also castrol. Much smoother running. I change oil and filters frequently too. No leaks and uses very little oil. If yours leaks then being slightly less viscous will allow more leakage maybe but it probably won't be noticable. Cold starts should be better with the 10W40 too. Sounds like a nice gift if you've got the space for it. Thumbs Up

My technical knowledge is pretty basic but I'm always up to learn more, hit me with what you've got!

The oil is 'Repsol diesel turbo U.H.P.D. 10W40' to be more specific. Think it's only released in Spain.

Gonna change the filter this week so i'll try it then.

At 100C the oil
you've been offered
has a runniness of 14.5.

Any engine oil with
a runniness of 10 to say 50
at running temperature
is Ok in a modern engine.

The 15W40 you use
has the same runniness
as the oil you've been offered at 100C.

Viscosity is a techie's word
for runniness.

The runniness of the 10W40
is 104 at 40C

The runniness of your 15W40
is 107 at 40C

So, very little difference when warm.

When they are below freezing,
the 10W40 will start a little more easily
and protect your engine better.

The better engine protection
is a very valuable asset.

The 10W40 is a synthetic oil,
which is a truly massive asset.

Experience tells me you will
get more MPGs and that
your oil will stay cleaner.

By the way, synthetic oil
doesn't not loosen old crud.
Nor does it drip much more.

Why should it?
It's very little thinner
except at low temps.
Your oil doesn't spend
much time running at low temps.

The only fly in the ointment
that I can see is how old is the oil?

Oil has a shelf life of say 5 years,
after which the additives go TU.

I've asked Repsol about it's shelf life.
I daresay they'll tell me fairly soon.
When they do, I'll let you know.

What's your next question?

haha my next question was going to be about the shelf life.

I asked my friend and he said he doesn't know exactly how long ago they bought it but he would guess at least 5 years.

I read that you can tell if the oil has deteriorated by the colour - that when it gets black it's not good any more.

Poured a bit out to have a look and doesn't look much like fresh motor oil to me.

It's a fair few years
since I saw oil in can.
Except for specialist oils.

Your can may have a date on it.

I wouldn't use oil that colour.

Oil's cheap - engine's aren't.

From Repsol.

Dear client,

We contact you regarding your enquiry about the shelf life of our product: RP DIESEL TURBO UHPD URBAN 10W-40.

Normally, we consider a maximum shelf life of 5 years for our products to maintain optimal performance. This assumes that the product has been stored in a cool and dry place, protected from extreme temperatures. Needless to say that the product must be in its original packaging with the security seal intact.

Once the package has been opened, we recommend it should be used completely within the following 6 to 12 months.

Should you require any further assistance, please, do not hesitate in contacting with us again.

Kind regards,

Technical Support – Repsol Lubricants

Well, looks like it's not a great idea to put this oil in my engine, but I'll buy some fresh 10W40 for when I change the oil later this week and see how it goes.

Thanks a lot for the advice guys!

Yes, except where the leak
is due to loose bolts.

On the other hand,
£6 buys a lot of oil.

That's more or less been my philosphy since I bought the truck.

Well, i dont know about prices in UK but here in Spain it doesn't buy that much oil actually.

Think I will give the Wynn's a try.

If you try eBay, you can get
oil from most places in the Eu.

Including from the Uk.

We kindly inform you that the manufacturing date is coded in the reverse of our packages. If you are interested in knowing the manufacturing date of a given product, please, provide us with that code, and we should be able to retrieve that information for you.
