A VC change isnt really a hard job to do, the VC itself is abit pricey but it will last for many many years if you keep even wear on the tyres. I have noticed its gear boxes that seem to be changed more than VC's but i guess thats down to most of them being 150000 miles plus on the clock. Top Vans syncros especially how you can just head off camping in harder to reach places so you dont get bothered by dicks.
Here is video clip of us wild camping at the weekend for some inspiration Wink

Hello All, well, i picked her up yesterday, drove back 176 miles -totally perfect! and she is beautiful :) I've been so high i'm feeling a bit weak at the knees now.

So, on the viscous coupling: i did the tight turn test that i got off syncronauts (link from Andi)... there does seem to be some scrubbing... it's difficult for me to tell if it's 'bad' amount of scrubbing as i have no experience of such things, but as this could lead to transmission issues (££££) i think i will get this disconnected for the time being, to be on the safe side. Gonna get in touch with my mechanic to see if he can deal with this vehicle (which i hope so, cos i trust him); otherwise, will have to find a lad (or lass!!) with specialist experience (may be in touch about that with u guys then).

Pictures soon -got loads on so can't do it right now, but will defo get some up, probably sometime next week.

Once again chaps, thanks all for the advice, opinions, videos and links. Everything is cool

:)

Hello again Peeps,
I've been trying this viscous coupling test from syncronauts: http://www.syncronauts.org.uk/?page_id=971 -the one where u put a 2x4 on the front wheels, raise the back wheels off the ground, and let the clutch out slowly in low-gear; the idea being the front wheels should stay still... Basically -i don't understand the logic to this!!

Surely, if the rear wheels are off the ground, because it is a 4x4, the front wheels would move -it would be like if the rear wheels were spinning in mud, the front wheels should move and pull it forward? (I would have thought if it was a 2wd the front wheels wouldn't move). Very confused about this, could u explain how this test is valid?

Also, assuming my VC is on the way out, i want to remove the propshaft to make it 2WD -The propshaft is the long pipe that runs the length of the vehicle, right? And is it just a case of unbolting it (anyone know what size bolts, i need to borrow the tools off a mate) -nothing more to do /watch out for -i just unbolt the propshaft and my transmission is safe?

Finally, i'll be putting up a few pics after the weekend (going to chichester on my first camping trip :) and giving a proper run down on the condition of my new van -should i put them on this thread, or more appropriate to start a new thread? (Yeah, i'm full of silly questions :)

And finally, finally, i *have* been grinning every time i take it for a drive :) :) :)

Cheers

You may want to slacked the retaining bolts for the front diff before you try to drop the propshaft.
I ran mine in 2wd last summer and after advice from the Syncro chaps on here I slackened off the bolts and then undid the bolts at either end of the propshaft, there is a small retaining lip on the prop that prevents it just dropping so a gentle jiggle will get it to come free - mind fingers and heads at this point. Best to give it a soft landing though.
May be worth getting it checked out for wear whilst it's off the van - got mine balanced and refurbed at GKN in Stoke but that's a bit far from you, there will be someone local.

They do feel very different to drive in 2wd mode, although mine is lifted quite a bit so that won't help.

I would start a thread in the Syncro section as a project thread - have a look in there and you will see a few.

Have fun!
