Do i need a different licence classification to be able to drive/use an LT40 campervan ? Is the vehicles maximum permitted weight the deciding factor or it's actual running weight in normal use?

Apologies if this is in the wrong section, or the question is a little unclear!

Cheers

A 35 is the usual maximum, that is 3.5 tonnes Gross Vehicle Weight.

However any LT can be down-rated to 3.5t GVW on the V5. The 28-55 designation are all GVW and it is highly unlikely that the more heavily rated vehicles will be running at GVW at all.

Plenty 4x4 LT40-55s on the continent have been listed as 35s.

Just another excuse for LT fun.Approve

Cheers, just checked my licence entitlement online at DVLA and it states for Group A;

You can drive vehicles up to 3,500kg Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) carrying no more than 8 passengers and driver with trailer up to 750kg; trailer over 750kg if combined vehicle and trailer weight isn’t more than 3,500kg MAM; Vehicles between 3,500kg and 7,500kg carrying no more than 8 passengers and a driver with trailer up to 750kg; Vehicles between 3,500kg and 7,500kg carrying no more than 8 passengers and a driver with trailer over 750kg if combined vehicle and trailer weight isn’t more than 8,250; Vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats and a driver with trailer up to 750kg;

So, does this mean i'm ok up to 7,500kg ??

I hope so, gives me one advantage of my increasing years Wink

That does not seem right, but if the DVLA says it is, I suppose it is.

I have no idea what my entitlement is, it is an old pink paper one.....

Be good to know, especially as i may be acquiring an LT40 soon!

You can drive a vehicle over 3.5 ton and up to 7.5 if you passed your test before April 97. If ypu passed after that you need a a C1 on your licence class

Cars

Category B

You can drive vehicles up to 3,500kg Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) with up to 8 passenger seats (with a trailer up to 750kg).

You can also tow heavier trailers if the total MAM of the vehicle and trailer isn’t more than 3,500kg.

You can drive motor tricycles with a power output higher than 15kW if you are over 21 years old.

Physically disabled drivers with provisional category B entitlement will also have provisional entitlement to ride category A1 or A motor tricycles.

Able-bodied drivers can no longer ride motor tricycles with a provisional category B licence.

Category B auto

You can drive a category B vehicle - but only an automatic one.

Category B+E

You can drive a vehicle with a MAM of 3,500kg with a trailer.

The size of the trailer depends on when you passed your test. If you passed your test:

  • before 19 January 2013 you can tow any size trailer
  • on or after 19 January 2013 you can tow a trailer with a MAM of up to 3,500kg

Medium-sized vehicles

Category C1

You can drive vehicles weighing between 3,500 and 7,500kg (with a trailer up to 750kg).

Yes it's me!

I am not an LT owner but have driven buses up to 7500kg on a car license as long as not more than the driver and 7 passangers as the max is 8 people including the driver.

Watch the 16 passenger seat catch yes if it has seats but no more than 7 sitting in them when in motion or you need I think a PSV or LPCV.

I drove the Red Cross Medical Unit which was a mobile treatment centre for road racing here which pitched up in the pits and also a mobile rent office for the local housing which went round the place collecting rents and logging problems. The bigger they are the easier to drive, no one generally wants to screw with something bigger unless they have a death wish.

If you are a younger driver here in NI they were removing your ability to drive up to 7500kg when you renewed your license unless you opted to keep it, younger drivers now have to do a test I think to get above 3500kg now bit like trailers.
