Hi all,
Have an LT 31 ambulance conversion. 1991 model. The engine is shot Cry and I would like to replace it with a turbo.

Does anyone know what type of engines will fit easily?

Thanks

Hi

I am possibly just about to replace my LT31 2.4 Petrol (1984) with a Diesel engine from a 1982 LT31 due to cam belt slippage. We are replacing the engine, gearbox, propshaft, fuel tank and engine mounts from the doner van. Obviously a bit of wiring difference but I can let you know how it goes (or doesn't).

Before going ahead with this transplant though I am looking at head damage on the petrol engine as we're not quite sure if the slippage has caused major damage. Will be finding out this weekend as my van returned home yesterday from Switzerland on a recovery truck......hooray!

Of course if the petrol engine manages to get going again then I will be quite willing to sell what I was going to use for the transplant to yourself. It is a 2.4 diesel, 6 cylinder, non turbo though.

Thanks

Dan

I'm not sure that it would be an easy swap, but a chevy V8 fits, here!

The Volvo, 740/940 TD engine is a common swap, Drunkenmaster has had one carried out recently, here is his blog. (I hope he won't mind me linking to it. I think the Volvo engine is about 125bhp, more than the standard TDs but I wonder if the torque curve is as well suited to lugging a heavy van around...
Mid engined, 6 cylinder, turbocharged 2 seater - it can only be a VW LT!

I'd say it probably wouldn't fit straight 'out of the box' as some other engines would; the sprinter is a different shape van to the older style LT, so it would be quite some conversion as the engine mounts in a very different way
