hhhhhmmmm , Mine is in at the dealers after I noticed the oil level was high, water pump apparently . Its out of warranty now by 5 months and the stealer told me that Vw  would not offer good will on this problem. The clonk has also come back as well but I suppose I'll have to live with that as there's probably no good will on that either .  VW = CRAP service.

oh and only done 24k

Do you have a full VW main dealer service history?  If not, that's the likely reason for not getting any goodwill from VW, which is offered to those who are loyal to the Brand.
If you do have a full VW history, you need to call VW Customer Care to complain you are not getting any goodwill, you should be entitled to something.

Its 2007 and yes its got full service history , well only 1 service done.

I'm picking it up tomorrow and am expecting a hefty bill , the only saving grace is that it was due a service in June and it won't need one now as the oil & filters have been done and they said they would reset the service counter.

Will be writing a letter to vw customer care for what good it will do.

I was under the impression that "Block Exemption" rules meant this type of blackmail by dealers/manufacturers could no longer exist?

I would have thought that simply by spending tens of thousands on a brand would have been a strong sign of loyalty?

Basically what you are suggesting is that after purchasing a new vehicle if the owner refuses to pay inflated dealer prices for general servicing then they should be "blacklisted"?

I cant see why someone should be discriminated against for using parts of equal or better quality than standard fitted by a quality independant specialist (very often ex manufacturer trained who knows their onions) who follows the appropriate schedule and records kept of what was carried out and fitted (thats what I do)

This is a sore point for me after my treatment by Mercedes Benz, they refused to consider a warranty claim for blatant rust (even the dealership and bodyshop admitted it was clear cut) because I didnt have a full dealer service history, I`m still curious how that could be an issue as paint aint a service item

The whole point of "goodwill" is that it is optional (unlike warranty), so VW (via their dealers) are perfectly entitled to offer something extra in whatever circumstances they choose.

From a business perspective I can see why they do it the way they do. They want to keep the money flowing in to themselves, not have it going elsewhere (ie to independents).

The "threat/implied promise" works with me, I take both of mine to the main dealer (but will revisit that policy once I am well out of warranty).

But it sucks that the accountants (penny-pinchers) weigh up the costs vs benefits of things like the (obviously) poor design/faulty materials used in 2.5 waterpump seals and decide that they are better off letting owners bear the brunt once the warranty has expired.

It's one of the reasons I purchased the (quite expensive) extended VW warranty on my Van so that I'm covered up until it is 6 years old.  At that point I'll decide whether to keep it or not, based largely on how reliable it has been.

So far the only disaster it has suffered is the usual failed oil cooler which let oil into the coolant - the annoying thing was that I knew about this issue well before mine failed (thanks to the brick-yard's excellent early warning system),  When I rang up my dealer I was assured that this wasn't a problem on my van, yeah right !!!  To rub salt into the wound about 6 months later I had to bring it in for the oil cooler fix "campaign", where they proceeded to take off the new, improved oil cooler so they could replace it with another one that was exactly the same as the one they were removing.  Everyone agreed that was pretty stupid, but it had to be done if I wanted to retain my warranty.

When did they start to be sold new with the water pump fix already in place? My 174 was registered in March 2009 (it is an ex VW head-office demo), and I'm curious if I need to get this checked-out?

I have an 07 plate trendline with 20,000 odd miles on the clock , I had a brief  issue with the oil cooler that they replaced under warranty when I was getting my service done  but besides that I have had no issues with the van whatsoever. If i was given the same choice again I would probably buy something like my van if i could find one in such good condition and low milage for the right price , I intend to keep my van regardless as I will always use it or need it , could always use it as a hearse LOL

Even if its on the long-life service schedule, a 2007 model should have at least 2 services by now. Hence the refusal of goodwill from VW?

ALSO, THE WORD STEALER REALLY GETS OUR BACK-UP,,, WONDER WHY SOME SOME TIMES PEOPLE CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO HELP YOU?!
OH, AND DEALERS ARE A BUSINESS,,, NOT A CHARRITY...
PLUS, SERVICING ON T5'S FROM £139 ALL INC, + VAT (WHY YOULD YOU EVEN THINK ABOUT TAKING YOUR VAN ANYWHERE ELSE)

Maybe because you book it in for a service being told it will be £139+VAT, but when you pick it up the bill has magically turned into £280 like it did in my case (for a 1st service).

Somehow I don't belive you....  why would you pay £280 for something that they quoted £139...
And if you have paid £280 ther must have been something else that they have done to it,,, for that they should have called you to get prior authorisation!?...  if you paid it and they did not ask for prior auth, more fool you,,,,,,,,,,  think back, did they change the pads or something like that?

I left a van in for a service to Agnews over here, old, oil filter etc. No cam belt, pollen filter, air filter, pads etc.

Was meant to be £170 all in inc vat.

Go to desk £280.00 inc vat?

Hows that???Confused

On your two year old van the drop linkage is worn??? We changed it for you.Big smile

Me,"And when was I consulted about this? Should this have worn out at 19K? And what are you looking to charge me?" Does the warranty not cover defect parts like this? Stern Smile

I had a cavalier 15 years old, horsed up and down everywhere well over loaded and pulled trailers it should never have pulled and when I sold it it had passed MOT with all but the main bushes orginial?

I agreed 200 and if they didn't like that they can get back under and put the old one back.

After that I always hand over written instructions to the dealers when any vehicle goes in on what I am looking done, any problems being reported and at the bottom is says,"Before commencing any additional works above the service cost or any chargable works authorisation must be sort. Contact number 07739 ******" Failure to do so means that works that are not authorised are carried out free gratius.

I run a business in the service sector to but some just try it on. Not all but some.

Only had good service from my local dealer in Shrewsbury. That said its too far for me to go,so I chose a local indy.
I,ve got an 04 130 T5 Kombi with 118,000 miles that I,ve had from new. I,m not a rallier type and normally get close to 40mpg. I,ve had the normal stuff go, water pump, turbo, drive shafts, plus the drivers air bag wiring?? other than that I,m really happy and apart from the price I,d have another one tomorrow.

Question is, are the newer 4 cylinder motors anymore reliable ($64,000 question I know)

Don't know about the motors (although I suspect extracting more power from a smaller 4 cylinder engine, equipped in some cases with 2 turbos could not be good for reliability but I stand to be corrected) but it seems the driveshafts are still made in the same cheese factory

Seems they've managed to transfer the "clonk" over to the new "improved" T5.1 too, I wonder what other similarities will turn up?Wink

Not to mention new problems that weren't common on the pre-FL versions (CV joints anyone ? )

It's like certain brands of boilers, speaking to reps and I quote a rep,"It's great you fix them and we make more money on the spares than the boiler we sell."

What I said,"Yeah if you buy cheap crap you expect to pay but, when you pay for supposed higher quality and better reliability you should be getting shagged the same way for crap products!"

Hence the Hynudai's are looking better value, longer warranty and cheaper, that way the money saved will pay for the lost time leaving it into the dealer, it could be in any more than the transporter espically the T5.1.

Mentioning the new problems don't forget the EGR, DPF, DPF switch fault, T5 faulty wiring on central locking below the seat, dodgy paint on the side door T5 and T5.1.

I wonder the marketing jingle ,"Lets go to work!" refers to the owner of the van going to work or VW and the dealers going to work on the customer finances to keep the VW vehicles on the road?????Ermm
