I`m in process of adjusting the valves on my JX diesel and cant get my head around the shim sizes and what to order. In short I`m having a brain freeze!!
Can anyone help me? I need to get the shims ordered from Brickwerks pronto!! I know that I need to get the exhaust value to 4.5 and the Inlet value to 2.5. These are the measurements that I have looking down on the engine in order; 1 Exhaust; Gap = 0.5 Shim in = 3.65 Shim needed = ? 2 Inlet; Gap = 0.2 Shim in = 4.00 Shim needed = ? 3 Exhaust; Gap = 0.5 Shim in = 3.85 Shim needed = ? 4 Inlet; Gap = 0.2 Shim in = 4.10 Shim needed = ? 5 Inlet; Gap = 0.2 Shim in = 4.10 Shim needed = ? 6 Exhaust; Gap = 0.5 Shim in = 3.90 Shim needed = ? 7 Inlet; Gap = 0.15 Shim in = 4.10 Shim needed = ? 8 Exhaust; Gap = 0.5 Shim in = 3.95 Shim needed = ? I look at number 1 and make it that I need a 4.15 shim to close the gap to 4.5. Or then I look again and think that I need a 3.70 shim! Which is correct? I feel like a dunce asking, but I want to get this right! Cheers.

I think you have confused something along the way.
You state "exhaust value to 4.5 and the Inlet value to 2.5" That is wrong, you have the decimal point in the wrong place. Think you meant exhaust 0.45mm and inlet 0.25mm which sounds like the large limit of clearance. fairly sure the range is 0.15 to 0.25mm for inlet and 0.35 to 0.45mm for exhaust (checked when cold) Your inlets look in spec but the exhaust valves are a little loose and outside spec. So they need closing up to the range of 0.35 - 0.45 which means thicker shims. EDIT: If we aim for having the exhaust valve clearance at 0.4mm then the new shims required would be ex 1: 3.75 ex 2: 3.95 ex 3: 4.00 ex 4: 4.05 Reason I went for 0.4 clearance rather than 0.35 is there will be some wear on the existing shims, and if we tried to get the lower tolerance clearance of 0.35 then we may find it gets too tight with a new unworn shim installed. Thanks for that. I've confused myself with decimal points!
Sussed it now, thanks again. |
