I've been in a dilemma for months now wondering what to do with our new born in the Florida when she grows out of her moses basket (which she has now). She's too small to share the bunk with her sister (who will promptly squash her little sister no doubt).

Anyway, we decided on a bunk bed for the cab to put our toddler in - the youngest can go up top on her own.

I bought some 32mm aluminium pole, some bunk bed brackets and 2 metres of 12oz canvas - and knocked up this:

Poles collapse to fit under the seat:

All in all im quite pleased. Just have to wait a few weeks until i can test it!

I phoned these guys up and they recommended this:

http://www.fabricuk.com/fabrics.php?fabric_type=619

They do a "hopsack" which is 12oz and cheaper - but i got the one above because thats what he recommended. I couldnt be arsed to risk it for the sake of £8 tbh. This stuff is very tough but still folds up nicely.

Looks great - I suspect it'll last the kids quite a while too due to the additional width.

I was a bit concerned that to get the bunk above the steering wheel, there wouldnt be much headroom - but it didnt turn out to bad.

Now im wondering if i can sleep on it!

What would you say the max weight it would take? My son sleeps up front and that looks great if he wants to bring a friend. Are they just caravan bunk bed brackets?

Its pretty sturdy - i might try it! However, i dont know for sure but im confident to put a toddler on it.

Brackets are these:

Well we used it for the first time this weekend.

Initially Fern bumped her head as the bunk is fairly high to the cab roof - but once she had learnt that mistake it was all good. Absolutely no complaints - so im assuming its comfy!

Also, it's the same temperature as the main cab with no drafts fortunately. Which was good because it was minus 2 outside in the night!

Hi

I'd love to do the same, I may order the poles from  a fabricator..... I don't suppose you remember the length of the poles ??

Also, do you know the internal measurement of the tubing... I'm wondering how thick the metal actually is ??

Just in case you still have it scribbled down somewhere ??

Thanks

Lee

Really sorry Lee - only just seen this.

The poles were standard sized (they only had two sizes) at 32mm i think. I cant remember the internal diameter but i reckon its something like 20mm.

Sorry - can remember then length. I got them oversized and trimmed them down with a hacksaw after i had offered them up. Cost me a few quid so i didnt want to mess it up!
