Hello .
I need a bit of information of a gearbox issue . I've built several engines , and done all mechanical and body repairs to cars and vans I've owned . But I've never worked on a gearbox . I'm having a problem with my gearbox , at first I thought it was the CV joint gone against the gearbox as it started making the same noise as the one on the other side did a few years back . Turns out there was a bit of play in it , but when I undid the bolts to swap it I found the output shaft and flange had a lot of play to them . Clearly the diff bearing needs replacing . I've not been able to find much information on this other than a thread here ; https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=491932&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0&sid=91ff7024bd46a68f697d2daa913c7274 . But that thread is about dismantling and rebuilding a gearbox with all the adjustments that goes with it. . Now I can take off the flange and remove the side adjuster , I can have someone remove the old bearing in a press , and I can fit in the new bearing . . My question is , how far/tight do I refit the side adjuster ? Is it just a case if marking the side adjuster and gearbox body before disassembly and refitting to the same position ? Is it fine to tighten to a certain torque ? . Or do I need to drop the box and take it to a transmission specialist ? Thanks in advance . |
