Hi all,

when I start my LT31 changing gear is fine but as the engine temperature increases, I notice that when I change gear eg from 3rd to 4th, it gets stiffer.  I presume its stiff due to requiring grease. Is that correct?  If so, where should I grease, what grease should I use and how do you access the linkage to grease it?

Thanks.

Have you check the oil level in the transmission by any chance?

Only reason I ask is that we've just finished a 'refresh' on an old VW, and having done all the other fluids, decided we might as well change the gearbox oil.
The gearchange tended to be a little 'picky', but would eventually get there - so we just thought that it was wear in the linkage (job for next time).

We cracked open the fill plug (always do that one first - no point draining it if you can't fill it!!), then cracked open the drain plug. We managed about a litre and a bit of decades old gear oil - when the capacity if more like 4.5 litres!

We refilled it, and it was absolutely transformed. I can only assume that there was enough oil in it to allow minimum lubrication for operation, but that it made for a poor gear change.

Worth a look on yours maybe.  If it seems to be a 'changing' condition i.e. starts OK, but gets worse with runtime (then maybe it's oil distribution related).

I agree with Chappy. I had same issue as you and it resolved after changing gear oil even though the level was fine. Make sure you get the correct oil as all the parts catalogues at motor factors tend to list oil for the 4 speed box and the 5-speed is hidden! I had that problem even when asking at VW. I mentioned this in a previous post.
Greasing around the moving parts of the gearshifter is easy enough and is worth doing as they can corrode causing stiffness and noise. You may want to opt for a spray on grease as it's quite deep down if working from above with little space for a hand to get in, failing that a stick to apply it should work ok.

Thanks folks for your invaluable advice. I logged in today and when I read your comments, I carried out your recommendation by changing the oil in the gearbox and your right, it was low and looking at the oil pouring out, it definitely needed changing,  so the new oil should make a difference. Thanks again folks. 👍👍

What is the recommended gear-box oil for the 5 - speed box?
I have two manuals.
One - in English - specs SAE 75W/90
The other - in German and specifically for the Florida - specs "API - GL4, SAE 80.
Which should I go for?

SteveSt, here's a quote from an older post:

According to a few sources , the later Mk1 LT 5-speed box should be using G060726A2 - NOT G005000 as partsbase and other free online ETKE's state. G005000 is for the 4-speed only! I got this info from an independent motor factor that specialises in VAG only. I later confirmed this with two official VW & Audi dealers. Most the other motor factors I've spoken to say 75W90GL4. G060726A2 is a single grade 75W GL4.This was based on my vehicle reg. I couldn't find out if G060726A2 is full synth, semi or mineral but febi sell one under that part number (and various other VW part numbers). Both G060726A2 & G005000 are available still with VW packaging for a decent price alhough the later is almost twice as much. Brickweks sell a 75W80 GL4 for T3's and say it's for LT's also. So who do you trust?
Please pitch in if you have found any info to confirm.

I've been using the Febi 75W GL4 VW part no. G060726A2

GL4 for the gearbox, and GL5 for the diff. I changed the oil in our Florida (where I'm sat right now as I type this!) and used GL4.  That was about 6 years ago.

Manual gearbox = GL4 (SAE80) spec oil

Differential = GL5 (SAE90) spec oil
