got a LT2 camper at the moment, am looking at converting a T5 ex Welfare bus,a lot of these vehicles are autos, are there any specific issues with these gearboxes, i would imagine they,re expensive to fix, vehicles i,ve looked at are between 60 to 120 thousand miles ,any advice appreciated, ive looked at other makes of bus Fords etc but i just can,t change marque, its got to be VW

The biggest problem with the T5 autos was that VW insisted that they didn't need the ATF changed or filters cleaned (ever !), which meant most failed quite early (but outside VW warranty). IIRC changing the ATF every 60,000km helped them last a lot longer. I think there might be some specialists that can recondition & modify them (control valves ?) so they last a lot longer, but I think it is a bit expensive .

It's easy to get spooked by these autos, and for good reason, however, if you find one with reasonably low miles, say no more than 85 thousand miles, ~AND~ has a verifiable service history showing that the AT has been serviced at no more than each 40 thousand miles (or lower, - services that included the pan filter, full fluid change, invoices, and or log book entries by dealers) ~AND~ it drives well, then it would not be too much of a gamble. The AT in my 2005 2.5 174hp has been serviced regularly and drives ok, not high miles yet but still. If I was to be buying now I would ask to have the AT pre-purchase checked by a specialist who knows them well, and also have a sensible warranty. Might be the same there, we have some statutory warranties here for used vehicles, to be sure you might buy a warranty. VW manual boxes can be risky and expensive to repair as well. The only VW transmission I have owned and had major trouble with was a manual - T3 Syncro, off the road for 2 months. |

many thanks mate, the lowest mileage auto i looked at was 62,000 and the highest 121000, all ex Council buses, so i would imagine they,ve been looked after ,ill certainly ask the question about the ATF filters and servicing and getting a warranty is good for peace of mind

My auto issues started at around 160K km(100K miles). No real probs till then. The odd flare at light throttle on the 2 to 3 change early on, but it went away once i started changing fluid. I had been doing my own partial fluid and filter changes since 75K km ish. there's also this That said, the manuals have there own probs, if the dual mass flywheel gets rattly and parts company with it's housing, it can take out the gearbox. The manuals are generally the better bet though, IMO Edited by Rebuild - 30 May 19 at 01:58 |
