There is a metal bush thats missing from the alternator bracket
where the top bolt goes through to hold the alt in. Thats the one thats a
pain to get to.
With the engine on there seems to be a lot of
vibration at the alternator. Not sure if it's to do with the missing bush or otherwise.I placed my hand on the bottom to feel it
and it seems to be much greater than the parts around it. It's quite severe so you wouldn't want to hold onto it for long (not that you'd need to). Is that
normal??? Edited by Monster LT - 18 Apr 19 at 12:58 |

I'd say no, in the long run it's gotta knacker the bearings.

Precisely my fear, but for the amount of vibration it may end up being in the short run. So I've got to find the cause of the excess vibration... hence thinking about that missing bush although I can't see it making all that big a difference. Maybe the belts overtight or somehow the bolts are loose. I'll need to get hold of some bush, give it all a once over and loosen the belt.

Take the belt off completely and check vibration, dunno what else it would be atm but it would rule out the alternator.

So I checked the mounting bolts again and took the belt off as you suggested Andy. There was no major vibration with belt off, so yes it was due to the alternator. I then loosened the the adjusting bracket replaced belt, adjusted and tightened all three bolts (adjusting bracket to block, adjusting bracket to alt and the top bolt of the alt with the missing bush). Started up, revd and rechecked for vibration and it's back to normal again with the added bonus of no noise. Very happy and hope that noise doesn't return!

Great news, if it does re-occur I'd change the lock nuts and locking washers but that's all.
