Hi
I'm looking for help/advice about a problem with my 2005 Transporter T30 TDI LWB disguised as an Autosleeper Topaz (its done 35000 miles). Recently I had a problem with the N/S window and mirror adjustment, which I ignored for a couple of weeks. Then I had a problem when unlocking (various random lights flashing, horn sounding, heated rear screen light flashing, etc .... Local specialist diagnosed this as Central electrics control unit (Boarnetz ?) and replaced it. Expensive but fixed problem. Then back to look at window problem and decided fault was the window motor and ECU, so this was replaced (expensive again). Now windows and mirror adjustments work BUT folding mirrors have a fault. They do fold/unfold but are not in sync so when one is folded the other is not, and operating the switch makes them fold / unfold so they are the opposite way round. The specialist has checked the computer and there are no faults but there seem to be problems recognising the folding mirrors. We've tried disconnecting the battery to try to reset the system but no success. Anyone got any idea what's going on are how to fix it or who to ask. PS new parts are all genuine VW

It's possible the new bordnetz module (AKA J519 or Onboard Voltage Supply unit) is not correctly coded to your van. If the old one was in poor shape they might not have been able to get the correct code from it. So it could be that they left it factory set or just guessed.
Because your earlyish van has folding mirrors it won't use the most common codes of 0000100 or 0000101. Someone with VCDS can probably work it out because our older vans have short coding and that makes the options more limited. They can use the list VCDS shows on the screen to add together all of the options your van has to come up with the code (remembering to add the heated and folding mirrors!) This assumes that they used the correct part number J519 (including the final letter) or an upgrade of that part number. This is because some J519 modules don't support some options (Cruise Control for instance is a common one). Edited by T5 TDI - 10 Jul 18 at 16:58 |

And there was me thinking it might be a wiring problem where the fold and unfold wires/connectors have gotten mixed up on one mirror somehow. So the control unit is sending the correct signal, but because the wiring has been switched around somehow the mirror is doing the opposite of what it has been instructed (ie folding when it should be unfolding, and vice versa).
It's not a high probability fault, but if nothing else works it might be worth considering. Is there any chance the connecting wires were disconnected from the plugs at any stage ? If so, that would greatly increase the chance of this particular error. Another possibility is the wires have broken where they flex as the door opens & closes and they have managed to touch the wrong way around, but I would think this is quite improbable.

Thanks for the advice.
I assume the replacement ecu's are correct because they were ordered using the VIN number and the part numbers on them were the same as the originals. I've checked with Autosleeper and it seems that the folding mirror option was part of the original spec on this van. If the new ecu was incorrectly coded would this "hide" the folding option from the system and can this be corrected using the VCDS system? We'll be away for the next few days in the van so I've disconnected the N/S mirror electrics and got it to stay in the unfolded position, so both mirrors are usable (because the drivers mirror still folds/unfolds using the switch). When we get back I'll get to it and try and get it fixed. I'll post the results. Thanks again. |

Yes and yes. It is unusual to have the confused movement of the mirrors you have but I think it is perfectly possible. Anyone with registered VCDS can change the coding.

Mirror problem is sorted out!!!
After much weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth whilst looking at wiring diagrams, computer screens and the van wiring, a solution has been found. Of course it is simple. Swap the wires feeding the "folding" motor on the passenger mirror and it works in the same way as the drivers mirror. Olympic standard synchronised folding mirrors - a beauty to behold. Thanks to everyone involved |

I have the same issue - drivers mirror open and passenger closed and vice versa.
Have tried switching out the windows switch, fuses, battery disconnect, door card off and checked loom is connected etc. Had the window motor replaced recently which might be related. Can I ask which wires you switched around? Was it in the loom behind the door card? Cheers |
