Hi all,
I have stumbled into the brick-yard and feeling a little lost.
Mr Names Dan and I in am a Love Hate long term relationship with my 1983 Westy (Just) Hi top.  I seemed to have quite to my surprise found myself spending a quite considerable portion of my spare time fettling, researching and despairing of this old thing and thought I was winning.................Gearbox appears to have deciding otherwise.
So it is also in aid of her, that I now find myself on my first ever Forum hoping that some piece of Wisdom imparted or advise given might prevent me from throwing my toys out of the pram and giving up.
If anybody feels like taking pity and explaining where best to ask about these things, or generally vent after 4 weeks trying to find something which apparently is rarer than gold, I would be most grateful

Thanks.

You haven't said if it is 4 speed or 5 speed.  Or what engine it has.  But Parts Emporium have several second hand boxes available.  You might find you are better off in the long run getting a reconditioned exchange unit.

Its a five speed DW box on a 1.9 dg petrol. My aim is to either purchase a good box which needs reconditioning or a scrapper but with a different fault as a donor box. I understood from having a brief email conversation with a specialist gearbox recon guy that this box is not common so buying one reconditioned off the shelf is unlikely. From the symptoms he thought it was probable that mine would be an expensive rebuild without finding a source of parts.
I am also trying to find a 4 speed box in running order on the basis I would have thought  that this is more probable and I could get running whilst waiting on the gearbox guys waiting list and trying to find a donor box.  I have been told that I am best to be looking for an ABD box although others fit.

4speed boxes have  different  linkages and gearlevers to the 5 speed boxes
My van ( H reg ) was originally a 1.9 DG engine and has  ASM gearbox might be easier to find as I believe the DW box was only fitted up to 1983

Aiden Talbot is the man to talk to about gearboxes if you haven't done so already
