Put a 600 ohm resistor in series with the glow plug temperature sender at the rear (front of the van end) of the cylinder head. This should give you a 4 second glow with the engine warm, and the engine should start easily.

Mines the same... tired fuel pump I believe. struggles to make pressure when fuel thin and hot...

So a 3p resistor or a £400 pump rebuild. The choice is yours.

My friend had an aaz in his Passat. It was a bitch to start when warm it turned over quite quick to my ears. He bought a new battery and it turned over faster and it started perfect. As said above it of often heat sinks into the pump from the engine. The diesel fuel becomes thin and it's hard for a warn pump to make pressure. Turning over faster might be the solution.

Hot or warm? Common fault this if warm is a problem. The engine needs a second or so glow when warm, the temp sender may be on the way out, telling the relay lies and shortening the required glow cycle. You can just unplug the sensor and get full glow everytime - cut the glow cycle short by just turning the key. Or counteract it's lies with a resistor as already said or replace the sender You may find advancing the pump a touch improves things if it is worn

In the end I had a switch put on the dash so I can work the glow plugs via a switch so when cold put the switch down for 5 seconds and when warm maybe 2 seconds now she starts great so problem solved so just needed a bit of glow ! Thanks for your help .
