This was after I fitted a brand new freewheel and rubber coupling, hence the slight squeaking noise.

Thanks Greg, It comes from a while back but I just thought I'd post it because it's so easy to check without any more dismantling than simply taking the engine tray off, and yet it could save a big bill (new compressor) in the future if you find the A/C freewheel seized and replace it before it does damage.

Handy that, just stripped mine down only to discover it's not the reason a/c is not working! £850 for new compressor from TPS!!

Ouch! Did you happen to notice if the freewheel was seized because that could have caused your compressor to fail over a year or two. A seized freewheel wouldn't stop the A/C working though. However if it was slipping rather than being seized, that could affect the compressor speed.
