Hi,
So it looks like my starting problem is diesel getting into the sump. So...what do I do. Spend a couple of grand on a new head, sell it, part ex it...or fit a v6 petrol lump (or even a 2.0turbo)?!? Has anyone got experience of the swap? I know you could get a caravelle witn that engine, but is it easy to do? And has anyone got any recommendations to a garage who would do such a job? Thanks in advance. |

I think converting from diesel 5 cyl (or 4 cyl ?) to petrol 3.2 V6 would be a big (and expensive) job, lots of parts needed and lots of labour if you are paying someone else. Not just the obvious (engine, gearbox, engine mounts) but ancillaries and electrics are quite complex.
If it was me I'd be looking at changing to a different T5 with the engine you want.

I'd like a petrol T5!
What ever way I look at it I'm going to loose a lot of money. Sell the van with the problem- going to get no where near what it's worth. It's easy worth £10k but maybe I'd get £6-7k? Then buy a new van and get it to where mine is now is going to cost at least £15k. If I trade it in I'd get £4-5k What's a new head going to cost £2k? I'm in a pickle. |

Yes, you are in a pickle ;)
To be pragmatic, you have already "lost a lot of money", you just haven't made that loss concrete (yet). Your van is currently NOT worth "easy £10k", it is only worth what you can sell it for in its current condition. It might be worth more if you fix it, but it will cost you to get it to that stage. As long as you are sure it will be completely fixed for £2k? then the logical thing to do is fix it and keep it.

I was saying it would be worth £10k with out any issues. And that's why I put that maybe I'd get £6-7 in its currant state.
I am under no illusions here. |

Paying a garage for that sort of swap would be simply outrageously expensive. You'd need to look for a specialist in the first place to undertake that sort of work.
If the issue is the CH then you best bet is get a known good second hand head or whole engine and swap like for like. Anything else will have added costs. Selling as is is either hiding the problem and ripping someone off or taking a singnificant financial hit. Probably more than it costs to sort the issue. If it's only a CH issue and you've got some space it's not an impossible home spannering job. Plus you can sort water pump / thermostat / aux belts at the same time. |

Wow I really feel for you! What a truly grizzly story yours has been. I think you can get a new genuine head with a cam for around 5k but check for yourself. Gaskets and fitting could add another £750. There are exchange heads for around the £1500 mark but I couldn't vouch for the quality.
A second hand engine is another possibility, but I can't see you getting that fitted, complete with a new DMF and clutch for less than around 4k and you really need to be sure about where it came from given your experience. Is your van converted or something? I'm well out of touch with prices but 10k even in perfect condition for your '06 (wasn't it?) sounds like a lot to me. I was only just thinking today that my old van must be worth between 5 and 6k these days. It's only a panel van but it's a one owner twin slider 105k and well spec'ced with original captains seats, A/C, towbar and stuff. Maybe I'm further out of touch than I think! The point is, you need to be brutally realistic about values and costs and especially what the van is worth to you. Did you have the tandem pump changed btw? |

Most of the second hand heads on a 5 pot have all suffered the same fate.... worn injector bores or the tandum pump which is one of the easier fixes. A recon head for the material and labour time is not cost effective when you can pick up a brand new head from an engine shop from £800 upwards in a bare state.
If you did go r32 or the r36 it would be cool but as t5tdi has said it could be with its problems, nothings without cost. I was going to allow 8 weeks for my conversion but thought it would be quicker to rebuild my 5 pot as anything modified is going to take more time than you think so i have a donor stripped van. |

Maybe I'm a bit ambitious thinking it's worth £10k, with no problems.
It's got Forge BBK, intercooler, EGR blank, Bilstein coils, really good rear seats on runners. I don't know if I can bring myself to spend 5k+ on a replacement head!! ? I swear I have the worst luck with vehicles. Ps I'd never sell it without disclosing the problem! Karma. |

I've had the oil changed so I'll keep an eye on the level. But as I said it's perfect.... for the time being! |

I hate intermittent problems.
As a suggestion, has the weather warmed up recently in your area ? If so the starter is probably turning the engine over slightly faster. IRRC these ECU's won't supply any fuel until the engine is cranking above a certain RPM. If there is any problems in the starting system (battery not holding charge, parasitic drain, poor electrical connections, starter motor/solenoid faults etc) then you can get starting problems that are just on the cusp of happening/not happening. These will then appear to be intermittent, but are actually temp changes which are enough to tip the balance one way or the other.

I had an 2.5 engine change due to diesel getting into the sump, at frist, got starting problem, then had to park the van down hill to start it, anyway on my way home on the A30 and Bang, it cost me 2 grand for a replacement 09 engine with 46,000 on it, £1,000 to fit it, though l now had this engine for 2 years now, still start first time in the morning, am always checking my oil just in case, when this one goes, l be selling it as spares, am even thinking in going back to the T3.

I have to wonder if with all the current calls to end diesels if there will be a viable alternative to replace engines with petrol power as our diesels wear out . Vehicles like the t5 that hold high values are not going to be easy to get people to accept scrapage desks for .
Problem is what's sort of mpg us petrol engine going to give us in a van , the small cc with big turbo isn't going work like it does in cars . |

There seems a few ttrs 2.5 5 pot petrol engines are turning up and are strong money for around £4_5k. Maybe an easier option as these can also give good results from a remap
