Heated rear Screen

   Last friday my heated rear screen went bang!   It wasn't particularly cold but as I pressed the button to turn the heater element off there was an almighty bang, like someone had shot it out!  They hadn't as there was no point of impact on the window, but it the whole screen had shattered, held together by the tint film!  Any ideas what might have caused it?  I don't think it was temperature difference as like I said it wasn't particularly cold out.  Short circuit perhaps?
Any thoughts appreciated!
